Even though I don't have that stereotyped image of women in ' 50s monster movies, I'm STILL a little surprised by how much the men in this film (except Chaney, I guess) accept the fact that Gloria financed the expedition, so she's more or less in charge. It takes all-out physical danger for one of them to rebel against that and say that they have to leave, and that's that, and even THEN you don't get that feeling that the "natural order" is being restored by the man taking over.

And there's also the very un-stereotyped Mexican official, who doesn't have his hand out for a bribe, even when they're trying to sway him. Between him and the lawman in WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST, Bert I. Gordon movies didn't exactly like to label Mexican officials.
