I'm bringing a dead post back, but Peter Cushing as Dr. Knox tells his niece "We are not demigods, Martha" in FLESH AND THE FIENDS after he's been out walking, offers to take a girl to his house to give her a little money and is told that he "might sell me to Dr. Knox". The encounter jolts his conscience.
So it was used in a horror film...and I thought I had imagined it.  Thanks much for pointing it out.  There are some fairly powerful lines of dialogue in FLESH AND THE FIENDS, that being one.  I wonder if the screenwriter of 1776 nicked the line from FATF?
