I thought the ending was very unexpected and the movie seemed to have sympathy for this poor girl whose life could've been so different with just a little support. She tried to find her niche, but it was just not to be. It worked for me because it drove home what pretty much all relationships have become for young people (at least from my cynical perspective), namely, unmanageable, soulless, and impossible. I personally saw a lot of myself in May, but I can see how her strangeness and troubled nature might alienate some.
