It's low key and character-driven, an arthouse type of horror film. It's more disturbing than gory, which some people like. Others thought the film was too sedate with the violence. There are still some squirm-inducing moments, though. Bettis is excellent, as is Jeremy Sisto as the Argento-loving Adam. Anna Faris (from the Scary Movie films) is quite funny as the coy lesbian and James Duval (from The Doom Generation and Nowhere) turns up briefly as a lunkhead May encounters. There's a real attempt here to make something sympathetic and intelligent and May, for all her weirdness, never loses the audience. This is a nice companion piece to the Carrie remake also starring Bettis.
