I guess you could tangentially relate this film to the slasher genre, which will usually affect an escape for at least one character, usually the token final girl who is the only character with any redeeming qualities. My Little Eye has characters who err to the narcissistic or mercenary side, but they certainly aren't deserving of such dark fates. Most victims in slasher films are rather cardboard, while the young people in this film seem more real, despite their misguided motives. Laura Regan's Emma seems the likeliest candidate for survival as she is the one who is plagued the most by conscience. Kris Lemche's scrappy Rex has the smarts we expect in potential survivors. That neither stands a hope in hell defies all expectations and because this isn't a 'safe' thriller, we're left feeling cold and empty at the end. That's a bold move and the filmmakers were willing to break convention even if it means risking the chance of losing the audience.
