You know something?  Karloff's Monster not only still brings a shudder and a smile, but a tear as well.

Decades ago, I lost all interest in one young lady who told me that the 1931 FRANKENSTEIN was one of the funniest(!) movies she ever saw.  All she knew was that you can't make a corpse, or a composite being put together from many bodies, come to life by shooting it full of electricity.  She refused to look beyond that fact, to the wonder of the film and the sadness of the Monster.  Philistine!
