Yeah, I mentioned in one of the Batman threads somewhere I think - the GREEN HORNET marathon knocked it out of the rotation and instead of going back to it the following week, they just didn't air the two episodes at all.

In its favor it is always a different cast and some of the actors I like to watch even in something lame, it moves fast, and usually the comedy is broad. None of that mushy Love Boat stuff. And it is the mini skirt era with the girls in super short dresses. I won't go out of my way to watch it, but if it is on when I am watching, and it has some actors I like, I'll look at it. Most of the episodes are no more than ten minutes as they have two per half hour, I think. Or was that per hour? It's been a long time. I like that one with Paul Winchell and Shari Lewis where they are too shy to talk to each other, so they converse through their dummies.

Today I caught the first HOGAN'S HEROES episode, and it was weird. The credits were different, the opening drum beat went on forever, with different shots of the characters than usual -- including what seems to have been a regular Russian prisoner, played by Leonid Kinsky (did he ever appear again?). Stalag 13 is called "Camp 13" all through the episode. Carter sneaks in from some other "camp", to trade places with the one prisoner who goes outside the fence. There is an elaborate underground base of operations, with a radio room, sauna, machine shop -- even a barber shop, where Klink's secretary gives manicures. There's another black prisoner besides for Kinch. And we see Hogan toss his hat on the spiked helmet on Klink's desk, the origin of the closing credit graphic. I'm not big on HOGAN'S HEROES, but this one was kinda interesting.

I agree that what saves this series in retrospect is that it was the mini-skirt era. The show is hard to watch as I hardly laugh at anything going on, but it's nice to see the actors who took part in it, and the girls are easy to look at. I remember seeing a final-season episode back when it was shown on TV Land years ago that guest-starred a 40-year-old Tina Louise. No, she wasn't wearing a mini-skirt, but I believe it was a halter dress. I thought she looked more beautiful here than in any episode of Gilligan's Island. Tonight's airing of LAS is the episode that started it all for Happy Days, "Love and the Happy Days," the 1971 unsold pilot New Family in Town.

Jun 20 12 1:25 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just started getting MeTV where I live (Boston), which took some tweaking and tuning of my set but now I've got it. Problem: their schedule for my time zone is not what the local MeTV outlet always airs. They show a lot of infomercial type programs, sometimes running an hour or two, then followed by another. Still, it's better than the old Retro was, and I caught two Peter Gunn episodes the other night, and the first was deadpan hilarious. Loved it. They also showed a rather depressing Route 66 episode about a woman with mental problems, which struck me as similar in tone to Naked City, which also had its share of "downers", and it featured similar production qualities, often too brightly lit, many what look to me like amateur "set ups" as to how the camera was used. It sometimes looked like a home movie. When I caught the credits I noticed the same names of producer and story supervisor (of whatever they call it) as Naked City: Herbert B. Leonard, the top Screen Gems guy, and Stirling Silliphant, a well known TV writer. Last night I watched a decent Combat! episode but dang!,--they air those info-things at times when I'm most likely to want to watch television: 10:00PN-2:00 PM. After that it's a little too late. A lot of the good stuff is on in the daytime. Anyway, half a loaf is better than none, and it's a pretty good loaf.

Some of them look like they shot the entire show in a park, and there are others that are like mini movies full of action, and others the standard guest star learning something about himself. Overall, better than average and I am not a big war movie fan. I like the ones that ae not realistic, like Vic Morrow going after a German tank with just his rifle, and Rick Jason going into a German prison camp and immediately escaping before the opening credits roll.

It was a popular show for boys but too grim for my tastes, the production values not that good. 20/20 hindsight is always perfect, of course, but at the time it must have played as state of the art, and it was unique in being the only real "combat" show on the tube that caught on big. The stories often lacked credibility. Vic Morrow was probably its biggest asset. There were so many "regulars", and World War II wasn't as good a format for the anthology type dramas there were the stock in trade for many dramatic series of the period. The western formula worked better, I thought, as did the doctor one of the Kildare-Casey kind, and even the far fetched The Fugitive, which had a certain ambiance that put it over. The Untouchables also had a unique style. Combat! didn't have the pictorial qualities of those shows, was grim and dirty and more downbeat than most. On the other hand, "downbeat" was the norm for many series back then, as most of the dramatic shows on TV weren't of the fun or uplifting variety aside from maybe the spy-secret agent type shows, but they came a bit later.

Gunn didn't go very often for big name guest stars and when they did, their name went bigger on the end credits. Coburn's name came first, as he had the main part, but not bigger lettering, so I guess he was just another regular guest.

Vigoda was in full Godfather/mobster mode, and Karlen seemed comfortably familiar as his henchman/lackey/underling. The West Coast sunshine did not dull their dark, shadowy edge.

Well I'm very happy they are airing BATMAN on Thursdays as I don't always get a chance to watch the Saturday Night airings but there's not much else I watch during the weekdays on MeTV except for the little I catch of THE HONEYMOONERS and DOBIE GILLIS in the mornings as I get ready for work and THE TWILIGHT ZONE late-night if I don't fall asleep.
