Sep 17 12 4:01 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have a real rock and a hard place kind of problem when it comes to electronic entertainment in public places, and also people's homes and cars - when I'm not being bombarded with things I find obnoxious, I'm being bombarded with NICE things, but the same ones for the one-millionth time! When it comes to the second thing, it's especially true with music. How $%^*())% many times can you hear Hotel California or Free Bird before you get sick of them?! Evidently with most people there's no such number, but for me it came along quite some time ago.

Not that it's terrible, or terribly non-descriptive; but for a lot of folks who use it, it seems to be the only tool in their kit! For everything from their first child's birth down to a decent comic book, "it rocks!"

I like it, I really do, but why should ANY word or phrase become the be-all and end-all of happy sounding expressions? And the other of course is "sh-t." I've never, ever liked "scatological" expressions, but even if I DID, that one is such a miserable all-purpose one. I don't know which bugs me more, when it's used as an all-purpose NEGATIVE word, or a POSITIVE one, or just a CASUAL one.

Most of the time the music is so loud at weddings that you can only converse by screaming into the ear of the person sitting next to you. In many restaurants, owners forget that music is supposed to be a relaxing background for the meal. "Highway to Hell", played at maximum volume, is not nice with your morning coffee and paper.

At company parties, for example, the volume level of "background music" -- canned music; not talking live acts here -- pretty much prevents normal conversation. So you have to boil communication down to what you absolutely must say, which you then have to pare down to 5 or 6 words, and then yell it. Be prepared to repeat yourself at least once. I tried to sit down and enjoy a greasy burger & fries at the local Five Guys the other night and the air was full of driving, cranked up 70s and 80s generic radio rock, really wretched stuff like “Life in the Fast Lane” and other junk more suited to a NASCAR convention. And Lady T, I wish the owner had “forgotten” that music should be a pleasant accompaniment to the meal. But I’m afraid it’s entirely intentional, and that the purpose of this “music” is to get the customer to fall into the rhythm, shove the product down his gullet and clear the table as soon as possible to make room for the next victim. Well, they succeeded with me, and permanently. Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident, but occurs at popular, inexpensive restaurants (just the kind I can afford) with great frequency.
