Before I begin, let it be said that I am a proud, maybe not devout (I support gay rights and gay marriage), but proud, Catholic. I did not find this offensive. What I DO find offensive (and frankly quite stupid) is that I read through all the replies here, and none of you, as far as I can tell, brought up the words "satire" or "satirical." This piece is SATIRICAL. A parody, even. Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the "I'm Nailed Right In" thing either, but to be completely honest, deep down I thought it was a bit funny. As a Catholic/Christian I think it's wicked important to show atheists and others that we are human, that we can poke fun at our religion. The guy doesn't sound like a believer, but he knows how to go about mocking Christianity in a "friendly" way. And what I also find offensive is that as big horror fans, you can't draw the parallels between Kong and God. Kong is a God and once he gets to NY, is seen as one. All I have to say. Why don't you do something to help me? The Psycho Ward's Classic Film Reviews - request a film to be reviewed!

Or at least he was a Christ figure in the 1933 RKO picture. . .Kong was the Savior. . .Kong is not a monster. He is Christ. King Kong died for our sins. King Kong... stands in for common man. He has come to represent the lowest of man, the salt of the earth, the worker, strong and oppressed. He is not Superman. He is Everyman. He’s not even man; he is removed from human experience. A higher being... Hm. The author's thesis is clear, more or less, but his supportive reasonings are...umm...muddled. Atrociously muddled. Finally... Jesus is seen as either just a man or just an evolved man. Really? Those are the only two options open to people with regard to who and what Jesus is? Be it ignorance or arrogance (I suspect a blend of both) what's really offensive about this piece is that the writer stated that last bit so DOGMATICALLY. I grade high school English research papers by the dozens once a year, a month before finals. I just did a batch two weeks ago. The writer's skills are barely at that level. His reasoning is even lower. His paper would FAIL for structural reasons alone. Don't be so offended by this guy. He's a fool with a keyboard and a thesaurus. Satire must be done with skill and - more importantly - possess a single-eyed insight into that which it lampoons, in order for it to work. That's about where I stand on the piece, and what I meant when I spoke earlier of the difference between chess and Old Maid. To really pull off satire/parody, you have to KNOW about your target - deeper than the level of shallow dismissal seen in this essay. You know what the writer's clumsy sneers about faith remind me of? The similarly hamfistedly superior comments about our beloved genre movies by "serious" film critics that many here have railed against for years!

Time for me to delete this site from my favorites list, and continue to get back to real life. Kong is a God and once he gets to NY, is seen as one. .....I haven't read many other posts on this topic, as I know they would annoy me. But how is it that this is "offensive"? Amazing, ironic, interesting...but "offensive"? Either by choice or because I just prefer to enjoy my old monster movies on the surface, not digging for deep meaning, I have never drawn any parrallels between Kong and God. Certainly, the tribal people fear him and wish to appease him, but who sees Kong as a God in NY? Maybe I haven't seen the movie in a while, and missed the connection to an almighty being, versus a giant, money-making freak show.

Maybe you take it too seriously though. From my perspective I read that piece as something of a humorous (even if in bad taste) and absurd essay. The notions he plays with are obviously so crazy that I don't see how it can be taken in an offensive way or even slightly seriously. The violent reactions to it however and the fact that people would spend time to react so strongly to an article about something as insignificant as Kong as messianic figure, really exemplify those tensions that are appearing in our countries when those issues appear. Because now they ARE issues. Same in Europe as on your side it seems.
