May 18 12 6:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just read that FORBIDDEN PLANET novelization, which was fascinating. One thing I don't think came up in the movie was Doc Ostrow's full name, the unwieldy Major (Medical) C. X. Ostrow. The big surprise was that C.X. stands for ........ Charles Xavier! Gee, I wonder who else might've read that novel back in the '50s ? Currently I'm revisiting THE MAKING OF SUPERMAN THE MOVIE by David Michael Petrou.

May 21 12 6:24 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I finished the MAKING OF SUPERMAN book, which I hadn't read since before the film was actually released back in '78. Visited today decades after the fact, it's a pretty candid day to day account of the many trials and travails that went into the making of a Fantasy Blockbuster in the days before STAR WARS, the film which transformed extraordinary subject matter into status quo. It's amazing to read about the time, effort, sweat, angst, money and ingenuity that these old men spent to put on film what today is accomplished matter of factly by kids sitting at keyboards. It's no wonder and a little sad that special effects aren't quite as special as they used to be. In spite of its dated Disco style, I know I'll be looking at SUPERMAN:THE MOVIE in a whole new way next time out of the gate. I find myself disappointed that the author's deadline came before the film actually wrapped production, and so doesn't include anything about how the ending for SUPERMAN II was pinched and pasted onto the end of the first film. Cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth was still alive too, and so the complete final titles concluding the book have the film being dedicated to the memory of two other (now forgotten) guys.

May 22 12 7:04 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Reading PLACE OF DEAD ROADS by William S. Burroughs. Middle volume of a trilogy (Cities of the Red Night, Place of Dead Roads, The Western Lands). Imagine a Science Fiction Western by the authour of Naked Lunch and you're there. Gay gunslinger Kim Carsons fights the B. B. (Bible Belters) - humans infected by a Venusian virus that makes then into "respectable" middle-class Americans. Wild asides on everything from drug use to the code of real-life hobos to much gun-love and lots and lots (too much in fact) gay sex. Deeply challenging, but be ready for the porn. I've got the classics like Naked Lunch, Junky, Q-u-e-e-r, and the Nova trilogy, so I'm used to the gay porn and drug use. A Western by Burroughs sounds pretty interesting. I'm going to start BEYOND TERROR: The Films of Lucio Fulci today. Can't wait! I've got a big hardback, mylar jacket, signed by the author, #544 of 693. Kind of an odd number for a limited edition, but there you go. I remember seeing this at the store when it came out, and thinking that 50 bucks was too much. (In 1999 I was not that financially stable, either.) I was just going to wait for it to drop to around 18 bucks and pick it up on amazon. I didn't know then how limited it was. Of course it went out of print and the price shot up to around $200 bucks. So for years I would periodically check amazon to see what it was going for, waiting for it to get down to an affordable price. Finally, a few years ago, it got to $80, which is still outrageous, but I guess that's decent for a gigantic, limited edition hardback that's signed. (I didn't know it was signed until I got it.) Now I'm about 4-5 years behind on my reading, so for a few years it sat on my shelf. Finally I just decided to get going on it, and here it is, in my sweaty little hands. Lots of gorgeous black and white photos with a few color sections. Lots of very small print, too. I may be doing this for a while. A perfect Monster has no end... Right now i've re-read several classic horror stories in prep for an article called, "The 60 Greatest Classic Horror Stories", which covers horror from the beginning of the gothic period to the start of World War Two. I've read alot of Poe, Lovecraft, Blackwood, Machen etc. and re-read DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN for good measure. I also re-read Pierre Boulle's PLANET OF THE APES and the novel, DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS, which were both terrific. I am starting Sax Rohmer's BROOD OF THE WITCH QUEEN this week and plan on reading some books on World War Two and World History.

May 27 12 1:49 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Currently about half-way through a very good zombie apocalypse novel entitled The Reapers Are the Angels, by Alden Bell. Billed/marketed as a worthy addition to the recent persistence of "literary horror" novels (along with Glen Duncan's The Last Werewolf, and a few others). Very Southern Gothic in treatment, dealing with a young girl's journey northward from southern Florida (because her island lighthouse haven has been breached by a single "meatskin" and she knows it won't be the last) many years after an unexplained zombie uprising. Bell uses present tense and no quotation marks to separate dialog, so if you have difficulty with that style, this isn't the book for you. I highly recommend it if you're not stuffed to the gills with zom-pocalypse scenarios. ... Reed

Finished EDGE OF DARK WATER last night...it's really more of a YA type book, if people don't go into it expecting something like the Hap and Leonard books they'll enjoy it. I'm on a "rural noir" type kick these days, so I'll probably find something else like that soon.

Overly academic and possibly suffering from the tunnel vision that characterizes cultural criticism out to prove a point, but still fascinating as an examination of the era that birthed so much of what we think of today as horror and crime fiction and film. The author ranges easily between art and film to dissect the fascination with murder and mutilation that characterized the works of Otto Dix, George Grosz, Fritz Lang, and others. She has a lot to say about Hitchcock too and regards him as being primarily influenced by this era of European grotesque art.

I'm surprised how often the Phantom appears, sans mask or any other disguise, in the early chapters. I think the idea in Leroux's mind was to make the reader wonder whether or not the "Angel of Music" was really the ghost of Christine's father returned to life somehow. I don't think any of the film versions have Erik show himself off so much, given that this would spoil the big unmasking scene with Christine. NATURALISTIC! UNCANNY! MARVELOUS!

How were the Kline Venus books? I've had all three in my collection for years (the Ace pb's with the awesome Krenkel covers) but have never read them.

Jun 12 12 12:37 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Currently reading the new Dark Tower book, The Wind Through The Keyhole. It's great... I can't put it down. Timewise it takes place after Roland's adventures in Mejis when he meets Susan. This time, he's with his friend Jamie (mentioned before but this is the first time he's got a prominent role in a DT book). They are sent back out into the boonies to find a "skin-man" that's been terrorizing the countryside. He's basically a shapeshifter, able to turn into a bear or a cat or whatever at the drop of a hat. The whole story is basically told by Roland as he sits with his current ka-tet waiting out a snowstorm called a "starkblast." In the middle of this story, Roland tells another story, a fairy-tale of sorts. I've just started this portion, and so far it's as good as the rest. I bumped Peter Straub's Sides to read this, and I'll be starting that next. I didn't know until I opened it, but Sides is a nonfiction collection. Forewords and essays, it looks like. After that, The Annotated Dracula. A perfect Monster has no end...
