I haven't kept up with modern country music for years... Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, et all... they mean nothing to me.
But Johnny Cash... greatness
Hank Williams... greatness
And I'm going to say it right now...
Marty Robbins... greatness that surpasses both of those.
OK, I'm drunk right now, if you couldn't tell, but sometimes inebriation leads to intellectual clarification...
I'll say I have a soft spot for "pop" country up through the mid-80's, maybe. Charly Pride, Sylvia, Bobbie Gentrie, Juice Newton etc.
And... the first song I can ever remember hearing on the radio is "The most beautiful girl in the world" by Charlie Rich. That might play at my funeral some day for that very reason.
My teenaged metal-head self would be embarrassed as hell to know that I started a discussion on this. My middle-aged self is more forgiving, more understanding, and more interested in what you guys have to say...
