Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, et all... they mean nothing to me. But Johnny Cash... greatness Hank Williams... greatness And I'm going to say it right now... Marty Robbins... greatness that surpasses both of those. OK, I'm drunk right now, if you couldn't tell, but sometimes inebriation leads to intellectual clarification... I'll say I have a soft spot for "pop" country up through the mid-80's, maybe. Charly Pride, Sylvia, Bobbie Gentrie, Juice Newton etc. And... the first song I can ever remember hearing on the radio is "The most beautiful girl in the world" by Charlie Rich. That might play at my funeral some day for that very reason. My teenaged metal-head self would be embarrassed as hell to know that I started a discussion on this. There's maybe a couple of new songs I like, from the last 25-30 years. Lucky for me, I'm from East Tennessee and my family has ties to Dolly, Porter Waggoner, and the Carter family. And here I am living around Nashville! We used to go to Opryland/Grand Ol' Opry about yearly.

May 6 12 12:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Big country fan here....hated it when I was a teen just as part of the whole adolescent rebellion thing, but love it now, especially the classics. I always have the Classic Country cable music channel on when I'm at home. I like pretty much all of it....can't say I really have a favorite although there are some I like a little more than others. I like Don Williams a lot, there's just something reassuring about his voice. I actually enjoy the current stuff too, although more as pop/rock music with a slight twang. It's funny because I hardly listen to any of the stuff I was into when I was a teen/young adult.

May 6 12 7:19 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm a lifelong fanof REAL country music. Not these idiots who put on a cowboy hat and pretend they're country singers. I'm with everyone who's posted already. My first big influence was Merle Haggard, then I grw to appreciate Ernest Tubb, Carl Smith, Hank Williams, Hank Thompson, Flat and Scruggs, The Sons of the Pioneers and so many more. I have know idea why it's always appealed to this city boy from San Francisco, but it always has. For Flatt and Scruggs fans - if you have Netflix streaming, there about a dozen original Flatt and Scruggs TV shows. The shows are basically a televised simulcast of the radio shows, but they're singing live and in person. Original commercials are intact as well.

I love how he thought "He Stopped Loving Her Today" would go absolutely nowhere because it was too morbid. Ended up being one of the quintessential country songs. There's very little that I don't like as far as classic country music, I guess some of the stuff in the 80s I don't like as much [never could get into Reba Mcintyre although I actually liked the hit she had recently] but generally all country is good to me. I almost consider Bluegrass to be a separate type of music, I guess more like folk music, but I enjoy the heck out of that too.

May 6 12 10:35 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As a kid, I got hammered with Jim Reeves, Leroy Van Dyke, Johnny Horton, Lefty Frizell, Ernie, Jimmy Dean etc. Not a modern country fan, though I do like the ladies of the 90's, I have all Suzy Bogguss and I like Pam Tillis, Kathy Matea, Michelle Wright, and a little Reba. But I couldn't name a current country hit. Why do I have to waste my time outwitting morons?

May 6 12 11:07 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I like quite a bit of the newer stuff, but I do think a lot of those artists would probably have not been considered country artists 10-15 years ago. Many probably went into it because it's marketable and the audience for plain rock-oriented pop has diminished in recent years. The Civil Wars is one of the newer groups I like an awful lot, they are worth checking out.

Gram was with the band for a very short period, but in that time he helped create one of the best and most influential albums of the era, IMO.
