May 1 12 11:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It's only loosely sci-fi/horror, but it does have a some steampunk, an extinct animal, and a bloody great fish, so what the hell, I'll include it. Saw this this weekend, and both my wife and I thought it was fantastic. Some really nice sight gags, something I'm pretty sure was a Murders in the Rue Morgue reference, and some really funny dialog. I think Chicken Run is the better movie, but Pirates had the funnier lines. The 3d works really well, and it's amazing what Aardman has done with water. I'm curious what anyone else thinks. May 2 12 10:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Went with my wife and daughter Sunday and we enjoyed it even more than she did. Definitely a family film where the adults will get a lot out of it and the children will get something totally different from it. An older woman behind me was howling the whole time with laughter and seemed to be getting her money's worth. I did notice that a leper ship gag seen in the commercials was changed to a "plague ship" in the film. Is there a huge leprosy lobby that i am unaware of that got that one changed?

Sep 19 12 7:54 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Did no one else catch the reference to FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD? I was definitely not expecting that. If I must explain: It occurs about an hour into the film, after the Pirate Captain and Charles Darwin have boarded Queen Victoria's flagship. They hide as a pair of guards walk by; one of the guards says "And that's why a shark will usually beat a Dracula" (a reference to dialogue in an earlier scene) "but a Frankenstein against a jellyfish--that's a different story." (Jellyfish, devilfish--let's not split hairs here. The resemblance is close enough to convince me of an intentional reference.) I presume that everyone noticed Frankenstein and his monster at the Scientist of the Year competition. Completists among you may want to note that they also put in a brief appearance in the short "So You Want to Be a Pirate!," a bonus on the DVD and Blu-Ray. (This short is also of interest to Brian Blessed fans, as he has more lines there than in the feature film--most of them about his love of shouting.) I'm in total agreement with the folks in this thread. A very fine, very funny film that features more in-jokes than I could catch. Not quite at the level of Wererabbit or Chicken Run, but very close. I'll be purchasing a copy of this for my personal DVD library. ... Reed

The film looks incredible and has a ridiculous amount of design and production: It just feels overproduced... but I admit I did laugh a few times.
