Oct 6 10 11:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Interesting, it's playing at the Kendall Square Theater in my neck of the woods around Halloween. I will be making an inevitable pilgrimage. Funny that it's not playing at the Brattle which usually gets Janus' stuff. They played Hausu recently. I like Kuroneko. Naked Island, Onibaba and this are kind of Shindo's "exotic" trilogy. Onibaba is Shindo's masterpiece, but this is good stuff too. The bits where the cats lick the ladies' charred bodies feel very Hiroshima. Kaneto Shindo had to have been making an inference to that as he did a lot of movies about Hiroshima and is from there so probably saw stuff like that first hand. Onibaba and Kuroneko feel very much like Eastern equivalents to Bergman's medieval films like Seventh Seal and Virgin Spring, they have similar brutal and merciless Dark Age settings and existentialist themes. He's a great, underexposed filmmaker, still alive, kickin' and making movies at nearly a century of age! The Japanese filmmakers who lived through the war have the most interesting perspective and humanistic philosophies. It's interesting that he also wrote a lot of films, such as Okamoto's Battle of Okinawa (I love it, the Nihon Cross of Iron in my opinion) and Fukasaku's brazen Under the Flag of the Rising Sun. Deathquake which he penned is actually a more interesting and dynamic movie outside of its (kind of drab) Nakano FX scenes. I remember I first saw the film in an awful quality bootleg sourced from a grainy British PAL VHS. The Eureka disc seemed like a huge step up. This 35mm print ought to be unprecedented. Here!

Apr 29 12 1:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched this last night and loved it! There's a few scenes I didn't care for like all the somersaulting. It's great to see the ghosts fly but I feel somersaulting was kinda silly and best left for action films. Could someone please explain the end to me? spoilers Why/how did the house burn down and why/ how did the guy get killed?
