Oct 29 07 12:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	TCM is showing 8 of the 9 Torchy films, I'd put together this grouping of promo art and photos from TORCHY BLANE IN PANAMA, partly because they were the nicer ones I came across, and also due to Lola Lane lookin' very ready-for-action in her jodhpurs and flight goggles!!! Looking forward to seeing these films for the first time...I know Glenda Farrell is the original Torchy, and have always loved her in MOTWM, she can really go toe-to-toe with the guys...and slings slang with the best of 'em! It kicks off the day after Halloween - Nov. 1st 6 AM-- Smart Blonde '36 7 AM--The Adventurous Blonde '37 8 AM-- Blondes At Work '38 9:15 AM-- Torchy Blane In Panama '38 10:15 AM-- Torchy Gets Her Man '38 11:30 AM-- Torchy Blane In Chinatown '38 12:30 PM-- Torchy Runs For Mayor '39 1:45 PM-- Torchy Plays With Dynamite '39 "Your brain is too feeble to concieve what I have accomplished!!" Apr 27 12 1:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Count me as a dedicated Glenda-as-Torchy fan - such a sexy manner, and the cast in her films really sing with chemistry. Lola was okay, but not as witty or convincing to me (though I appreciated the odd visual in Lola's Torchy where Gahagan's lodge dressed as jungle men go to the rescue of the robbed bank!) Here is a question through: why isn't Glenda or Barton in Torchy Blaine In Panama? It would make sense if it was the end of a series, but to change the main leads for one film in the middle doesn't make sense. Was this done due to a contract dispute, or swere they sick or committed to another film?

Apr 27 12 4:34 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I wish they would too, Tony! I do have the set from WA, and I'm glad I do, but I always love to see them on TCM! Maybe once Boston Blackie runs its course on Sat mornings, we might see Torchy Blane in that spot. They've been running series films in that Sat morning slot for several months now. I love Glenda Farrell best, the chemistry between her and Barton MacLane is a lot of fun. And add to the mix Tom Kennedy's character, and it's a great recipe for a fun mystery every time!

May 3 12 9:55 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This is my theory: Series films were often made back to back, and not always released in the order they were made. It's possible that "Panama" was made after all the Farrell's, but shown earlier for some reason. A close look at the historic detail in "Panama" might tell us if it's newer than the Farrell Torchy's.

Joe Shuster and I, the co-creators of Superman appreciate it. My wife Joanne was Joe's original art model for Superman's girlfriend Lois Lane back in the 1930s. Our heroine was, of course, a working girl whose priority was grabbing scoops. What inspired me in the creation was Glenda Farrell, the movie star who portrayed Torchy Blane, a gutsy, beautiful headline-hunting reporter, in a series of exciting motion pictures. Because the name of the actress Lola Lane (who also played Torchy) appealed to me, I called my character Lois Lane. Jan 4 13 1:46 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In years past, whenever TCM would show Torchy Blane, even in marathons, for some reason they would skip over Fly Away Baby. Well, TCM will be airing it this Saturday, the 5th, at Noon Eastern / 9AM Pacific. Maybe it's got something to do with The Torchy Set being readily available, I don't know. Anyway, just a heads up.

In the intro, Ben Mankowitz (sp?) said that after the first four films, Glenda Farrell left the series (he didn't say why). Lola Lane replaced her in "in Panama" and the movie bombed at the box office. The studio begged Farrell to return and she did for two more films. The she left again and was replaced by Jane Wyman for one film before the series was cancelled. I like Farrell in the role but I think the other two ladies do a good job as well.

I think Glenda returns for 3 more films actually before finally bowing out for good, for Jane Wyman to close it out. Funny that they also replaced the character of Lt Steve McBride each time Farrell wasn't in the lead role. After Oscar's month, these will return on Saturdays at noon to close out the series, 4 more I believe.

Mar 16 13 5:14 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've been enjoying this series that has been running on TCM for the past several weeks (with exception of Feb for Oscar's month). Today's episode was entertaining though you could feel it was getting a bit long in the tooth with a few of the scenes. However, the plot was still fairly strong (even if the ending was a bit anti-climactic even with the somewhat twist to it). Leading up to that though it was mostly entertaining. I think Tom Kennedy's Gahagan is one of the best ever in that type of sidekick to the main detective buffoon type of role. He's very charming and endearing and for the most part not too over the top silly though in this series, he was a bit that way. Today's was TORCHY BLANE IN CHINATOWN, by the way. I don't want to give away the ending for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I really thought they were going to solve the mystery a different way than they did.
