Mar 29 12 1:43 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	On a bit of Sherlock Holmes jag, due primarily to the second series of the new BBC SHERLOCK. I recently finished The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes by Adrian Conan Doyle and John Dickson Carr. I especially enjoyed "The Adventure of the Two Women." Just picked up John Gardner's The Return of Moriarty, which is turning out more fun than I'd expected. I've also dipped in some Chester Himes in the last few months: Blind Man With a Pistol and Cotton Comes to Harlem - and revisited Robert Graysmith's Zodiac and a few of Robert Parker's Spenser novels. Not quite sure what's up next. Something not so crime-y

Apr 6 12 12:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Re-visiting the novels of Nathanael West, unread since college days, in the comprehensive Library of America edition. Day of the Locust was one of the best books I read back then and I'm looking forward to seeing if it seems as impressive to me now. One interesting bit of biography in the supplemental material is that West was a student at Brown University in the early 20s and had been an avid reader of James Branch Cabell and Arthur Machen. Wonder if his path and Lovecraft's ever crossed, since they were both young men with literary ambitions. I bet they would've hated each other.

Apr 6 12 5:00 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Right now I am re-reading Brubaker's CAPTAIN AMERICA run via the first omnibus. Man, back in the day Lee Majors would have been a pretty good Cap. I wonder if Steve Epting used some old Majors pics to be inspired at times. He really looks like Cap in this book. My fanzine all about Rock N Roll: www.sonicruin.com

Don't be put off by the goofy name -this is a terrific series, packed with demons, angels, magic, you name it. Kadrey has an effortless writing style that lets you turn page after page without ever feeling the time go by.

(It's just a coincidence that I found it at a garage sale on Saturday, and that it starts at around Easter.) I'm just glad it was a copy of the BANTAM one, because you don't have to read novels to be sentimental about the COVERS, and the Bantam one is the one I always saw.

Apr 10 12 8:15 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Last Things, by David Searcy I read Searcy's first novel, Ordinary Horror, when it was first published, but am just now getting to this one. Set in the part of rural East Texas where I spent a couple of childhood years, the setting feels very real. Searcy's style is unlike anyone else's -- discursive and suggestive, similar to British writers like Robert Aickman, but quite different too. This story seems to be about an apocalyptic cult (or maybe the thing they worship) making scarecrows of meat...though for what purpose, I am still uncertain. Creepy and effective!

Apr 15 12 11:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Day of the Locust, by Nathanael West Pleased to say that this novel holds up really well after all these years. On re-reading, West's other three major works seemed a little creaky, even juvenile, but this is a great book...Hollywood Gothic at its finest. I didn't know till I read some of the biographical notes in this edition that West's last film work was an uncredited script contribution to Stranger on the Third Floor.

Apr 21 12 2:29 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just started Zombie Movies: The Ultimate Guide. It's pretty good so far, except it's very similar so far to Book of the Dead from FAB Press. You get a history of Voodoo and zombies from Haiti, and then it moves on to the reviews, mostly chronological. It's got sidebars about major movies and interviews, so it's a nice companion piece, but so far I'm having a sense of reading it all before. I just picked up The Passage today from the thrift store so I might give that a try next. Anybody here read it? Is it good? A perfect Monster has no end...

Reading Lyndsay Faye's novel THE GODS OF GOTHAM, but also dipping into GUTSHOT (weird westerns) edited by Conrad Williams and SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE CROSSOVERS CASEBOOK edited by the late Howard Hopkins. Lurking in the TBR pile are ISIS UNBOUND by Allyson Bird, GHOSTS by R. B. Russell, STUDIES IN TERROR by Jonathan Rigby and KRONOS by Guy Adams. So many books, so little time, dammit! The opening set-up, which is a novella in itself, is extremely powerful. Then the rest of the book settles down into a post-apocalyptic journey that is full of mysteries and adventure. Cronin is a very good writer. The follow-up book is entitled The Twelve, will be released this fall. I have it pre-ordered on amazon. ... Reed

Young film student discovers all the movies in the world are part of a conspiracy. Don't want to reveal any more, but it's pretty wild. Darren Aronofsky was planning a film version but cancelled - maybe he's in on it?

I've had FLICKER on my shelf for 20 years and have never gotten around to it, despite all the great stuff I've read about it over the years. For those interested, a Google search brought up a free pdf of the novel. I didn't download it, so can't vouch for it.

May 10 12 10:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Three-day business trip with two long flights equals two books read. Prague Fatale, by Philip Kerr. The newest Bernie Gunther mystery. Not horror fiction per se, but plenty horrifying and this one has a golem motif woven through it. Kerr's novels depcit episodes in the career of a police investigator in Germany in the years between World War I and the Cold War. His original trilogy, packaged as Berlin Noir is superb and the subsequent novels in the series retro-fill the character's life. This book was pretty swell, functioning both as a believable bit of real-life horror and a pretty good locked room mystery. The Bride of Frankienstein: Pandora's Bride, by Elizabeth Hand. Good airplane reading, but incredibly silly. I've never cared for the kind of book PJ Farmer specialized in -- a collection of "celebrity" guest appearances and dropped names from other people's works woven into a loose plot, though this is a reasonably entertaining example of that sub-genre. If I had really read this book in a critical frame of mind, I probably wouldn't have finished it, though reading it as a captive audience I found it more fun than otherwise.

May 14 12 10:26 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Haunting of America: From the Salem Witch Trials to Harry Houdini, by Joel Martin and two other guys More accurately, I'm trying to read this. Its package makes it look like history, but just a few pages into it, any semblance of credibility has fallen apart. The reference in the preface to witches being burned at Salem was the first clue. The authors are either gullible or hucksters, or both, because they apparently believe in everything -- aliens, black magic, psi powers -- and their approach to history is to assume that everything is true, no matter how unlikely. I'm pressing on for a bit because I'm a little out of date on new age wackiness and this appears to be a mother lode of it.
