Apr 4 12 7:34 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I repeat myself from another website on this subject.....The first 40 minutes are near brilliant in LIFEFORCE. But soon after the film disintegrates into a morass of cliches and too much nonsense to be taken seriously. A sad misfire by Tobe Hooper. Sad, cause it could have been one of the best sci/fi horror films of the last 30 years when it came out. Frank Finlay was a cut out cardboard Quatermass otherwise known as Fallada. I think he would have made a great Quatermass. By the way, this is just my opinion in case someone tries to beat up on me for this. "You can't smell any reefer, can you"?

Apr 10 12 3:30 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just watched Lifeforce aagin on the strength of these comments. I've always had an apreciation for the film since seeing it (international cut) on it's initial release in' 85. I've always thought Steve Railsback was miscast and wondered who might have done a better job. He looks bewildered most of the time (intentional I know) but looks to me like he's thinking "what am I doing in this thing?" Peter Firth though is great and looks as if he is playing the part with his tongue firmly in his cheek! Altogether a very noble failure for Tobe Hooper/Cannon.

The butchered US theatrical version ran 101 minutes; the international version which turned up on laserdisc and DVD is 116 minutes. It still seems like there's crucial footage missing.

Apr 20 12 1:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I don't; the US version hurts the pacing and makes the story more confusing by chopping out vital hunks of plot detail. Plus, the whole fabulous opening sequence has been chainsawed off. I never need to watch that version again.

It's a super entertaining film and it feels like there's stuff happening all the time, at times for no reason but that doesn't make it less entertaining. Weird zombie-skeleton-life-sucking things, Jean-Luc Picard and Dwayne Barry almost kissing, explosions, more zombies and a search for a constantly naked lead femlae vampire - what's not to love?

Weirdly enough, I loved the film but recently read the whole novel and hated it... even being interested in the paranormal, it was a dull slog for me, and I felt like it was a little bit on the weird Dr. Strangelove "they are taking my essence" thing... but to each their own!

Apr 27 12 1:29 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Some people didn't like the Kabbalah-centric central storyline in Promethea, but I like Alan Moore's outlook in general, so I appreciated it. I did understand that if people weren't into that kind of thing, Promethea might seem off. That is how Wilson's Space Vampires felt, because after the initial set-up (remarkably like the film), the book takes a philosophical left turn and becomes similar to Dave Sim's bizarre anti-woman outlook about women being voids and taking essences from men... it was an okay idea in the story, but (imo) it overwhelmed the mystery and took any power out of the narrative... I almost wish Wilson had just done the idea as a non-fiction theoretical work about how a vampire could work instead of setting up a cool premise then losing the action. I think the filmmakers made a more compelling story.
