Dec 10 05 3:12 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just watched a Doco on Ridley Scott and once again Bladerunner was glorified not only for its style but also original story............... Now I 'm sorry...........but this film was LARGELY made in the 60's as Creation of the Humanoids.....but you never hear of this largly unknown filM (also has Dudley Manlove in it)......as a source material. It has pretty much the EXACT SAME story......including the replicants desire for a soul and purpose (EVEN RELIGION) as well as the SAME TWIST ENDING Now i like BR but its certainly not the revolutionary film so many jerk themselves over. Really makes me angry at the lack of research and ass-licking in film review and analysis.

Dec 10 05 1:46 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I understand why BLADE RUNNER has such a huge fan base, but I don't understand how anyone could say "it's the greatest science fiction film ever made!" as I so often see. It just has too many terrible moments. My favorite is the excruciatingly awful death scene for Joanna Cassidy. Not only is it in slow motion (that most juvenile of all film gimmicks), but Cassidy's stunt double looks absolutely nothing like her, and we have all those slow shots to drink in that realization. And that final shot of the dove flying off is like something out of PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. But I do love Rutger Hauer and Brion James, the overall look of the film, and even the sometimes annoying Vangelis score. Not sure I want to sit through CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS again, but if I do, I'll look for the similarities.

Dick, who never ran out of ideas, would stoop to swiping from Jay Simms, who lifted many of the elements of CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS from Capek's play R.U.R. and so liberally borrowed from a couple of Ward Moore stories for his PANIC IN YEAR ZERO scri pt that he was sued. Genre fans are highly susceptible to the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.

Scott choose not to pay anyone one Blade Runner and just borrowed inspiration.

I can see the glaring similarities to Blade Runner, but that's not what impressed me most. Creation of the Humanoids has got to be one of the worst movies ever made!!!! Stunningly boring, dull and monotonous. Poor Dudley Manlove standing around holding that sad-clown frown firmly in place. It was just worse than my somewhat glowing childhood memories. Hoooo-boy. It makes Blade Runner look like a Michael Bay action blockbuster.

As much as I enjoy the director's cut of the film, I actually prefer the original home video released version. This differs from the original theatrical version and even the altered theatrical version in that they added in several minutes of violent footage that was previously cut out. I actually liked the tacked on ending because at least it was an ending. I'm not the type of person who has to have everything spelled out for them, but Scott's cut just seemed, well, unresolved on several points. You never even get an idea of what's going through Decker's head as he heads out with his android gal pal at the end. Is he going to his death? Will they get out of the city? He found evidence that another Bladerunner had been to his apartment and seen his 'house guest'. In the home video and the reissued theatrical version they explain that the other cop saw her, but left her alone. Nothing is said on the matter in the director's cut. For all we know he might be waiting outside Decker's apartment building with a group of cops ready to nab them. Scott's cut is very good mind you, but it feels unfinished. I haven't seen his Final Cut so maybe he fixed that problem then. Another thing I prefer about the original HV release is they left Decker's narration in. I realize it's all superfluous, I mean the film plays fine without it, but there's something about film noir and narration that seem inseparable in my mind and Bladerunner's greatest strength (for me at least) was how perfectly it married that genre to science fiction. It's so obvious how Harrison Ford was trying to ruin the narration, although I'm not sure if it was because he wanted them to not use it or just because he was annoyed about having to come in that day.

It is kind of slow in parts but that adds to the realism. Harrison for some reason doesn't seem thrilled to be in the film (maybe sick of sci-fi after Han Solo?). Whatever the case may be, it stands as a very original film in style. One of my favorite movie moments EVER is Roy Batty's final scene. It makes me realize how much I take life for granted at times. Sean Young is also very good in the movie. Movie inspired Rob Zombie's hit "More Human Than Human" as well.

My initial reaction upon seeing the movie when it was released in the theatres (I was about 13 at the time) was mixed. I didn't really notice or care about the atmosphere or style laid out in the first half of the film which I thought was incredibly boring. However, I really got into it when the action picked up in the second half, the culmonation of which took me completely off guard (Batty final scene). I was not expecting it to go the way it did. All I can say is that it was a very powerful scene that had a really poetic monoluge delivered perfectly by Hauer. I was driven to see that movie again when it came out on video specificly for that scene and after I watched the whole movie a couple more times, I came to appreciate the noir feel and the wonderful sound track which seems to fit so well with the movie. Sure it has its flaws; the are alot of holes in the story and it is slow at times. Still I think it is a great movie, not the best all time Sci-Fi, but it is a great movie. By the way, I was wondering which peopled preferred the narrated vs. no narration final Batty scene. For some reason, I always like the narrated version of this scene better. I saw BLADE RUNNER at the first matinee showing the day it opened and was blown away. But what mainly captivated me was the "atmosphere and style" it offered. Here, to me, was something that was both clearly futuristic and yet readily identifiable. I was absolutely rocked by the look of the thing. I agree about Hauer's "death" scene and the poetry in the script. That speech is the best of it, but it's not all -- "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long. And you have burned so very, very brightly, Roy." The action scenes, however, I thought were just so-so. I wanted more of that horrible, incredible city and more of the "poetry." Of course, I was a lot older than 13 when I saw it and that probably contributes. All in all, I think it's just short of greatness, but with some high points that are absolutely magnificent.

May 17 12 2:12 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Creation of the Humanoids? Nah. I just don't see it. Like a lot of Hollywood "art" films, Blade Runner had influences all across the spectrum... P.K.D.'s novel, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" was the major one... R.U.R. of course was the seminal play which influenced just about every story to come after it. There's the old Outer Limits Episode, "Goodnight Mr. Lawrence" (not sure about the title) but the plot concerned a clone being created in order to track down an escaped alien carnivore... but then the clone wants to replace the original. The Japanese anime "Wicked City." There's bits of Metropolis scattered throughout the movie, including the iconic shot of the police station which mimics a rather famous still from Metropolis of the city scape, looking down. Lord only knows how many film nior classics got raided... Maybe it's just me, but it also seemed like Scott was paying a pretty obvious homage to Rashmonon's scenes in the rain, when Batty and Deckard have their final confrontation. But, "Creation of the Humanoids?" Not really. COTH has an amazingly literate script. It's far more intelligent in it's storyline and details than many of the multi-million dollar films being produced recently... (yeah, I'm looking at you, "I-Robot!") But the number of ideas transplaneted from that movie to Blade Runner are pretty minimal. Even though COTH did talk about downloading people into robot bodies, that's not quite the same thing as implanting artificial memories so that a robot believes itself to be human.
