To its original release my local reviewer quipped that it should've been called, "Jane Goes to the Jungle." NATURALISTIC! UNCANNY! MARVELOUS!

I wanted to find novels which focus on the female supporting cast (e.g. if someone wrote a Zorro novel focusing on Lolita Pulido, his fiancee from The Curse of Capistrano). Apr 23 12 12:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was going to stay away from detective series, because of the topic title, but I see that you include Carole Nelson Douglas's Irene Adler books, so: Laurie R. King has written several novels about Sherlock Holmes's wife, Mary Russell. Also, back in the 1970s ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE ran a few stories, by an author whose name escapes me, in which Holmes's landlady Mrs. Hudson solves mysteries on her own. Given the vast number of Holmesian pastiches out there, I would not be surprised if Mary Watson and Violet Hunter have had adventures of their own. After killing his series character Van Der Valk, Nicolas Freeling wrote two novels featuring his widow, Arlette. Henning Mankell's BEFORE THE FROST was published, at least in the U.S., as "A Linda Wallander novel." Given the developments of the most recent novel, I would guess that, if Mankell continues the series, he will shift from Kurt to Linda as protagonist.

Her first appearance hardly counts as much of a puzzle plot. Gold Eagle did a pastiche called Femme Fatale which feature female Stony Man agents. Anyone ever do female centric pastiches of the Shadow focusing on Margo(t) Lane? Any Buck Rogers tales focusing on Wilma Deering (Buck Rogers started in prose)? Spider short stories focusing on Nita Van Sloan? Perhaps Moonstone might have done the latter.

Jun 1 12 9:20 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Almost certainly NOT the kind of thing Scathach is looking for, but I'll just mention Elisabeth Hand's Bride of Frankenstein novel, PANDORA'S BRIDE. Plus John Kessel's Nebula award winning novella from a few years ago, "Pride and Prometheus", a clever and surprisingly moving mash-up featuring the two youngest Bennett sisters, Dr. Frankenstein and his creation.
