Apr 17 12 4:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just picked up this great little collection of early European stop-motion shorts by Ladislaw Starewicz from Image Entertainment. Makes a great companion piece to Image's THE PUPPET FILMS OF JIRI TRNKA (or even Milestone's THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED). Two stand-out shorts are THE FROGS WHO WANTED A KING and THE MASCOT (which appeared as a bonus feature on Image's initial DVD of VAMPYR). I was surprised to find, however, upon opening the case that it's now a DVD-R instead of being the regular DVD it once was. Unlike VCI (which tells customers when a title is now only offered as a burned DVD-R), the title listings on Image's website make no mention of the change in formats.

Apr 17 12 6:58 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Bit of a bummer Image didn't state upfront that they're (apparently) switching to DVD-Rs. When Warner Archive started up, they explained that DVD-Rs were being employed for older/more obscure titles that weren't considered strong enough for an official, pressed-disc release. And then today I get an email advertising, among other titles, VICTOR/VICTORIA ... which was always a strong seller for WB. Ah, well ... Sorry to hijack the topic just to crab. I bought CAMERAMAN'S REVENGE and JIRI TRNKA years ago, and have marveled at them ever since. Absolutely love this stuff.

The same thing happened to me when I bought Image's NOMADS OF THE NORTH/SHOCK DVD from Amazon. Real nice. Oh well, at least I've got the films.

(And their price tends to be a bit lower for those.) And there are some older catalog offerings from Crescendo Records that are now being offered as CD-R rather than CD. (Price isn't lower, but they do identify the format being used when you pull up a title.) Wow, Tim, hadn't heard about that new Starewitch disc. How does content and quality compare to the Image release?

Apr 23 12 10:44 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Another neat Image compilation of European stop-motion is THE PUPPET FILMS OF JIRI TRNKA, which also includes a nice featurette on the filmmaker. My only complaint is that the copy of THE EMPEROR AND THE NIGHTINGALE used on that disc replaces the original opening titles with line drawings of nightingales against a bland white background. The original English language release of this had the opening credits superimposed over the child's room, with the camera panning from a portrait of Hans Christian Anderson to the boy's toys. It was much more in keeping with the tone of the film. These new title cards are just too bright and modern-looking, and really feel out of place.

Also included on the disc are a nice theatrical ad done with the same technique and a documentary featurette on filmmaker Lotte Reiniger.

I have, I also bought a great 2-disk UK set of her short subjects. I'm a stop-motion fan. Anyone who thinks Willis O'Brien, George Pal, and Ray Harryhusen are the last word in stop-motion are missing the boat if they haven't also tried Ladislaw Starewicz Jiri Trinka, Jan Svankmajor, and The Brothers Quay.
