Apr 5 12 11:41 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It all depends on what you believe. For years fans have wanted to see Edison's Frankenstein, but it was long gone. Until it turned up. Same thing with the missing Metropolis footage. I find it hard to believe nothing, not even a small fragment of it exists. I think it's out there somewhere. Maybe not the whole film, but maybe just a piece of it.

Very possible it may never be found - but there's always the possibility that there is a print out there in the world somewhere that could turn up. 20 years ago I never thought I'd see Edison's Frankenstein or any of the missing segments from METROPOLIS (or even anything that looked better than those crappy versions that we got on VHS back in the day) - and yet, here they are! So I still hold out hope.

Apr 5 12 2:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Pretty sure that the existence of 1910 Frankenstein was known for several decades but it was nearly impossible to ever get it out of the claws of Mr. Detlaff who had the only print. My memory is somewhat fuzzy on the timeline but it's something like this: - reports that Detlaff had a print. 70s? - Detlaff agrees to show a little on local TV. Bootleg vhs tapes with the clips go on sale shortly after. Late 80s? - Fred Weibel publishes a book on the film, it's players, etc. With it - for a brief time - he includes a vhs tape of the full film plastered with "Property of Al Detlaff" rolling across the screen every few seconds. If you weren't quick to order, you didn't get a copy since iirc Detlaff forced Weibel to stop distributing it. early 90s? - much later, the full print came out. I think that I remember reading too that years back the film was placed on some sort of "most wanted lost film" list with the full understanding of the list-makers that A.D. actually had a copy; they just wanted to use the list to somehow to encourage him to come forward. The AFI's Most Wanted list, which dates to the late '70s. The AFI knew that Detlaff had a print, and they hoped that his altruistic spirit would get the better of him. It took longer than a decade. Theda Bara's CLEOPATRA was also on the list. The AFI knew that Raymond Rohauer had a few reels, and they likewise were hoping to goad him into releasing the print; but Ray had "issues" with the AFI, so he let the film rot in the can.

It is a little commented upon fact that the railroads probably saved more lives than anything in the 19th century. Prior to the railroads, many perished in famines. Railroads allowed food to be quickly shipped to areas suffering from famine, thus saving many lives. I was, of course, just rattling your cage. Lincoln was our greatest president. Lincoln was a forward thinker, but I think the best analogy for his pushing of the transcontinental railroads is the president in the fifties who pushed interstate highways. The president who pushed space in the sixties would be better compared to Nimrod of Shinar.

Apr 17 12 11:51 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	At this stage in the game, I'd bet my paycheck that there are three films which have a ZERO chance of ever being found: DER JANUSKOPF, A BLIND BARGAIN and LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT. Because of their status as lost films and early works of latter genre masters, all three have garnered world-wide attention, considerably more attention than has been paid to other, more artistic, more worthy lost films. The vaults of the world have been searched, and nothing has turned up. I know that some people continue to hope, but at some point you have to be realistic. None of these films have been seen by the public in (at least) 85 years, and the clock's ticking. Acetate doesn't last forever, and nitrate even less so. Of all the lost silent horror films, the one that probably has the best chance of being found is THE CHINESE PARROT. It has never been high on anyone's list of "gotta find it" films, so it may well have passed under the archival radar. Additionally, it has the benefit of having been released through Universal's 16mm Show-at-Home division, so it is possible that there are still some brittle 16mm prints stowed away in some unknowing person's attic. May 7 12 7:08 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm hoping to see it in the Great Screening Room in the Sky, when I finally shuffle off this mortal coil. BTW, the excellent BBC crime series "Whitechapel" recently finished up a two-part story arc that featured a lunatic obsessed with LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, and who watched his own print of it in his flat on an old-fashioned projector. Not alot was made of it being a "lost" film, but it was interesting to see it as a plot point and to see glimpses of the recreation playing on the screen (and in the lunatic's head). There was a passing reference made to the true-life story of the film's original run, when a viewer (in England, I believe?) killed a woman after seeing LAM and claimed that the film had so unhinged him that it drove him to kill.
