Here's a genre indie film that I recommend you go into blind, with no foreknowledge whatsoever. Recently released on Netflix disk, even the sleeve blurb gives away enough info to reduce the entertainment value, but is also so vague that it makes the film appear (at least to me) like another one of those Nameless-Channel originals that are light on just about every apect of film-making except poor CGI critters.
Outcast at 93 minutes is solid from start to finish, and I won't speak much about the storyline other than it is extremely intelligent and well-written (by the brothers Colm -- who also directs -- and Tom McCarthy). The story is set in the Edinburgh (I think) projects, filmed in a familiar color-washed bleakness, using fast-editing where appropriate. Special effects (necessary but not overdone gore, and some other interesting stuff) are sparsely used but work well when revealed. The Big Name, if you want to call him that, is James Nesbitt (of the stunning mini-series, Jekyll), but the film is an ensemble piece, using Irish/Scottish actors who are quite excellent across the board. If you want more info, all I will say is that this is a Celtic horror film that involves a hunt of sorts. Figuring out what is going on is part of the entertainment.
Highly recommended. I'm going to purchase my own copy.
