Jan 22 12 6:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As mentioned in other thread, someone bought me the Granada box, so I've been watching those more or less in order. I don't know whether I should mix them up a bit to avoid a depressing sense of decline though. I did watch The Three Gables and thought it quite dreadful apart from Peter Wyngarde's brief bits of business. (Brett's health problems aside, someone needs to explain to me WHY the Kabuki makeup in the later shows?!) Anyhow. I watched The Resident Patient tonight, previous night, Greek Interpreter and Norwood Builder. All sterling efforts. And I echo the positives on Charles Gray -- strange to think he was only about four years older than Brett, I think he even plays the role at least ten years senior. He looked old forever though. He was like 38 in the Devil Rides Out, I guess. I'm really enjoying them, anyhow, and regretful of my negativity previously...

Apr 5 12 2:21 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw the Rathbone "The Hound of the Baskervilles" again, after seeing the recent "Sherlock" remake ... I think the hound (and the moors) looks better in B&W and the recent version went a bit too far off the original premise - as much I'm enjoying the reboot as a whole!

May 21 12 7:54 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	On PBS Channel 21 in NYC, they've been running the Brett series for several years on Saturday at 7pm. When they reach the end, they just start all over again. By coincidence, it worked out that this past Saturday they aired "The Final Problem" and then the next night on the other PBS station in the market, Channel 13 aired "The Reichenbach Fall" of the Cumberbatch episodes, so both series are at the same cliffhanging (no pun intended) point.

I hadn't seen those in ages and they were just a pleasure. Alan Mowbray was a welcome presence in Terror by Night; and, until he appeared onscreen, I had forgotten that Laurel and Hardy foil Charlie Hall makes a brief appearance as a cabdriver in Dressed to Kill.

This is spooky - just as I was reading the above, Hall popped up in TWICE TWO on ME-TV. Initially, I wasn't thrilled with the image/audio quality on the dvds I was watching, but after sitting through a couple, I sort of got used to it. Only half-hour shows, but I think they did a decent job getting as much storyline into each as possible. For the last few weeks, my wife and I had taken to watching a couple every night just before bed.

Oct 29 12 2:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	"Hound Of The Baskervilles" (1959) Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee Plot: IMDB Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson investigate the legend of a supernatural hound, a beast that may be stalking a young heir on the fog-shrouded moorland that makes up his estate. Phantom's Review: While not one of my favorite Holmes films, this is nonetheless a superior mystery film with the ususal Hammer Film atmosphere and style. Cushing makes for a fine Holmes and Christopher Lee is a bit subdued as Sir Henry Baskerville. Well made and entertaining even though they made a few changes to the Arthur Conan Doyle story.

Dec 10 12 12:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just watched the "Seven Per Cent Solution" yesterday. Had seen it some time ago, it was time for a re-visit. Really noticed a similarity to Rathbone's Holmes, although much more chaotic. When Williamson is screaming out "MRS. HUDSON!!!!!" it reminded me very much of Rathbone calling out to her. Oh, other similarities, I suppose, but that stuck with me. Good film all in all. And by chance, later in the evening saw "We're No Angels" (the Bogart version), and Rathbone plays a decidedly nasty character in that, getting his due from the cute little snake, "Adolf."

I just looked this up on Netflix...and of course it's yet another title that they only 'have' that goes straight to their "Saved" limbo. Just watched The Spider Woman. Gale Sondergaard is quite delightful.

A bit stage-bound, but that's to be expected from an early television production. Ms. Ankers was definitely the best thing about the episode. I've always liked Alan Napier, but he seemed too 'nice' and sedate as Holmes. Maybe I've just become too used to Rathbone's brusque tone and hyper-activity. Thank you so much for the link, jplibby.
