Mar 25 12 1:42 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Time for some silliness ... upon reviewing "Gojira", I took time out to enjoy the DVD extras and watched the commentaries and "The Making of the Godzilla Suit!". Great fun, and it made me realize how effective the hand puppet and head bust versions of the creature used in closeups were ... I think they're more frightening than the full body suit. The odd, zombie-like motions, the small forearms, the soulless eyes create a very creepy feeling. One moment that the suit does give a chill is when the creature approaches the photographers' perch tower. For a second, it almost seems the actor may trip over his own feet, but his walk perfectly mirrors a death march as it approaches the tower. Other moments ... "Lord I love Spring! The birds, the fair weather, the new flowers. It doesn't get any better than this. HOLY CRAP! what's THAT?!?" Last Edited By: Saturday8pm Mar 25 12 2:23 PM. Edited 1 time.

Went over to a buddy's house and watched the blu-ray of Gojira front-projected onto his 100" screen and noticed for the first time... Takashi Shimura (as Dr. Yamane) is wearing a fake moustache! We could see the edge of the lace in a closeup. I always assumed it was real. I wonder if his (smaller) 'stash in Ikiru is fake?

Actually the shots using the puppet including the aviary shot, Godzilla scorching the cop car, throwing the train, biting the tower, chomping at the clock, etc, those are a lot of the most memorable moments. I believe Godzilla's first appearance on Odo Island was done with the puppet as well. Kawakita did a good job updating that technique with Biollante and King Ghidorah by using that animatronic head, a lot of the most memorable and lifelike close-ups of Godzilla in those films use it. Nakano's cybot Godzilla is more a mixed bag, very effective in some shots, goofy looking in others. jlcarrozza.com

Uch: Exactly! particularly just before the creature snaps at the clock. It turns, and seems mighty p'd O that something is distracting it from its blowtorch demonstration. In these small moments its head resembles the early design drawings and looks very much a mushroom cloud. Another neat touch missing from all other films is the quivering lower jaw. It seems to be thinking what it might destroy next. I've seen "Biolante". Would be worth a revisit to compare. That was an interesting film. Quite different but the theme was swiped from "Smog Monster". "Lord I love Spring! The birds, the fair weather, the new flowers. It doesn't get any better than this. HOLY CRAP! what's THAT?!?"

From what I understand, Burr was quite fond of the movie and took the message it had to convey very seriously. I seem to remember hearing that he was dead-set against doing any "comedic" material (or drink Dr. Pepper) for his scenes in the US version of THE RETURN OF GODZILLA (aka GODZILLA 1985),. In fact, I heard that New World had wanted to completley rework the film into a comedy and Raymond Burr's refusal to participate if they did so is the only reason they did the version we're all familiar with. Gravedigger's Local 16 - "What is he that builds stronger than either the mason, the shipwright, or the carpenter?" 6'+ (Six Foot Plus) - Musical madness (and more) from the GdL16 gang.

It must be that Burr had that very much on his mind during filming. Here's a pic of the puppet used in "Gojira", thanks to Skelton Knaggs, who dug it up. That particular one holds a special place in my heart, as it was one of the first behind-the-scenes pictures that I ever saw for a Godzilla movie. Burr should have fond memories. Godzilla helped get him out of his typecasting as the heavy in films noir, which was completed with his casting as Perry Mason in 1957.

I also admit, when watching Gojira, I really miss his report room narrative in the attack on Tokyo scenes. I think that scene adds a lot to the movie.
