Mar 28 12 12:52 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was told that they will not play back in a drive that can also record DVDs. There was even an early warning from the Archive that one could damage the drive trying it. I'm not on such a budget that I'm willing to take the risk.

The reason I watch them on my PC is that my regular DVD player is also a recorder. I've tried them there and they won't play. I've had no problems playing them on the PC, however.

Apr 10 12 10:51 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Sometimes, I record a movie from TCM just because it looks like it will be enjoyable to watch while having lunch or working in the kitchen. Now and then, the movie turns out to be a real treasure. I watched "Murder in the Fleet" yesterday, just because it had Nat Pendleton and Una Merkel. I was rewarded with Mischa Aurer as a Japanese diplomat, with Keye Luke as his assistant. Keye Luke does a lot of bowing and, once gets to whisper to Robert Taylor that he was busy being seasick while the murder was happening. He never gets to actually say anything ! Raymond Hatton was running around with the secret plans, looking angry. Ward Bond , Jean Hersholt, John Hyams (dad of Leila) were there and Arthur Byron was there, too. According to the credits, James Gleason was a co-writer. According to the IMDB, the character "Jeffreys" was played by Richard Tucker, who was the "first official member of SAG. Apr 15 12 12:05 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Watched THE BLACK PIRATES today. Lon Chaney Jr. gets 4th billing and with the title and the year of release ('54), I was hoping to see some rousing action on the high seas. And hopefully Creighton would, as in RAIDERS OF THE SEVEN SEAS, play the hero's threatening but still cuddly sidekick. But no. Chaney plays a "Bless you my child" priest in monk's robes and there's nary an ocean wave to be seen. The movie's "star," Anthony Dexter, plays the head pirate but he's hardly a dashing John Payne or Errol Flynn or Burt Lancaster. He's slimy, villainous, and downright repulsive. And that's our star. The hero of the piece is the Sun Demon himself, third-billed Robert Clarke, as a severely put-upon good guy. Chaney and Clarke are hardly inspired or brilliant, but at least they give semi-adequate professional performances. This is not something that can be said for anyone else in the film. Some of the worst acting you'll ever see on screen. But at least it shows that Chaney didn't just spend the fifties supporting Gary Cooper, James Cagney, or Sidney Poitier in "A" flicks, or adding to his genre cred with THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN and THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE. He also got to appear in god-awful, bottom-of-the-barrel garbage like this. The movie is not badly directed or edited, and has the virtue of real Latin American locations, but the script and performances are so epically lousy that its meager virtues just seem sadly wasteful. I can't comment on the photography because I watched it not only on YouTube but in an indescribably awful print. Looks like an 8th generation dupe rescued from the prairie dirt after a cattle stampede. The flick was so lousy that I pulled an old edition of the Maltin movie guide off the shelf. I thought there might be some clever, cutting remarks on this turkey. But the only adjective used was the way-too-mild "uninspired." And the rating was two and a half stars (out of four). Apr 26 12 1:09 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	THE BLACK PIRATES lacked any reviews on IMDB so I wrote one myself on Sept 24 2009, giving it 3 out of 10 stars. There has since been one other review, rating 5 out of 10, a little more sympathetic. Landlocked pirate movies are typical of lower budgeted titles, including Hammer's outings with Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee.

Apr 26 12 2:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In one of my interview books, producer Robert Lippert Jr. goes on and on and on about THE BLACK PIRATES and Chaney -- some VERY funny stories, IMHO, and lots of profanity. Chaney pulled a practical joke on writer Fred (STAR TREK) Freiberger that sounds hilarious. But awful. But hilarious.

As an added treat, Woodbridge finally got to give the big bad wolf some overdue payback by refusing to cash Ollie's check, thus dashing his hopes of renting a motel room and bedding virgin on the verge Hayley Mills.

May 17 12 8:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yesterday I watched CAPTAIN KIDD AND THE SLAVE GIRL (terrible movie, by the way, terrible, terrible, terrible), and there's a character actor who's awfully familiar, but try as I might, I couldn't come up with his name. So I hit IMDb and it's James Seay. The name was almost as familiar as the face, but I don't think I'd ever connected one to the other. Quite a filmography he has. Just looking at the '50s -- we all know Ken Tobey, John Agar, Richard Carlson, and such supporting players as Morris Ankrum, Whit Bissell, Tom Browne Henry, Walter Sande, Russ Bender -- but I honestly think Seay may have appeared in as many '50s sci-fi/horror films as any actor. Of course, most of his roles are smaller than those of the above-named actors. Still, he was there. I plan to remember his name from now on. Or at least as long as my aging brain cells will allow. Here's a list of those '50s movies: WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE FURY OF THE CONGO DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL PHANTOM FROM SPACE WAR OF THE WORLDS KILLERS FROM SPACE KISS ME DEADLY I'VE LIVED BEFORE BEGINNING OF THE END MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN Outside of that decade, he also appeared in THE GREEN HORNET STRIKES AGAIN, THE FACE BEHIND THE MASK, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?, THE DESTRUCTORS, and PANIC IN THE CITY. Is it him ?

May 19 12 11:36 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Richard Reeves does look a lot like Glenn Strange, who wore a moustache as the GUNSMOKE bartender from 1959 until his 1973 death (Reeves died in 1967). Glenn's appearance on THRILLER ("A Good Imagination") failed to make the final cut, although he still received billing (sources claim he played an Indian).
