As of now (March 2012) CATMAN OF PARIS is on the Netflix Instant Queue, as is VALLEY OF THE ZOMBIES (1946), LADY AND THE MONSTER (1944), THE VAMPIRE’S GHOST (1945), and several MR. WONG films with Karloff in the title role.
A good many more of these have turned up on Netflix since the early posts in this thread. You’ll do your own search for your faves, but I have to recommend THE STRANGE DOOR (1951). Now there’s a rare treat – Karloff and Laughton – Need I say more? And one I just discovered on Netflix: THE BRUTE MAN (1946) with Rondo Hatton and the lovely and rarely-seen Jane Adams (the hunchbacked girl from HOUSE OF DRACULA – now you’re interested, aren’t you?). And SON OF INGAGI (1940) with an all-black cast! These don’t turn up too often!
Found on eBay: I purchased CAT AND THE CANARY (1927) on eBay a couple of years ago. It was a knock-off (Alpha) but serviceable; it’s available right now at 5.95 from oldies.com. There are usually a few on eBay in the $15 range, if that toots your horn. I also bought an acceptable quality NIGHT OF TERROR (1933) knock-off on eBay (with Bela Lugosi doing a BROAD imitation of Bela Lugosi). I’d been looking for this one for years, ever since it scared the pants off me as a little kid hunkered under the covers late at night on the living room sofa. For the longest time I didn’t even know what it was called, I just remembered that bug-eyed boogie man coming out at the end threatening to come over to the house and get me! I also found the seldom-seen THE BLACK CAT (1941) with Basil Rathbone, Broderick Crawford and Lugosi (in his second BLACK CAT).
I’ve been looking for DEAD OF NIGHT myself and can’t seem to locate it. Same for MAD DOCTOR OF MARKET STREET and FACE BEHIND THE MASK. And SEVEN FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN – I’d love to see that one. Finally read the book by A. Merritt not long ago, and I’ll recommend that for a good read. (I found it free on the web; it’s public domain.) SECRETS OF THE BLUE ROOM is another I remember as a kid, but haven’t seen in decades. Any ideas?
MURDERS IN THE ZOO turns up on TCM occasionally.
Thanks for all the titles, y’all. Now I’ve added a few to my own list!
