I watched this last night, recorded off TCM a few days ago. I had seen it once before, long ago. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who
likes a nice little murder/suspense picture. Ida Lupino, an actress I have great respect for, is a housekeeper/companion to a retired actress. They are
living in a rather picturesque cottage on the always foggy moors with one servant girl. Ida gets a letter-it seems that her two crazy sisters (one of whom is
played by Elsa Lanchester) have gotten so out of hand that they are to be kicked out of their rooming house. Ida goes off to London on some errands for her
boss and to retrieve the two cuckoo-birds. While she is in London, a distant relative (Louis Hayward) shows up looking for money. It seems that every so
often he takes advantage of his position as bank teller to help himself to a "sample" of some of the cash.
There is no question of who the murderer is or what the motive was; the suspense here is in the interplay among all of these rather unusual people. I found myself hoping that all would turn out well for dear old Ida, since her motives were selfless. (I also root for Dracula, the mummy , etc - they never seem to win.).
I hope some of you have seen this nice little movie. I'd be interested in your opinions. If you haven't seen it, I think it is worth a few hours
