Feb 27 12 10:41 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My dad took the whole family to see ELEPHANT WALK. This was sometime between 1957 & March 1959. In March, THE SHAGGY DOG was released. Our ma took us kids to see that. Tho I have vague memories of two other trips to the movies in the 50s, I can not remember the films. So I`m going with ELEPHANT WALK. One of the vague memories is of a scene where this guy sees some glowing eyes approaching in the dark. For years I thought it may have been FRANCIS IN THE HAUNTED HOUSE. About three years ago I finally saw that film and there was no such scene in it.

My first horror movie in a theater was the immortal "Reptilicus", at the likewise now defunct Lyceum. I remember as a lad thinking the poster to this gem was soooo neat. To a young'un the movie wasn't bad, either. Wasn't 'til years later that my childhood memory was shattered when I revisited the Dragon from Denmark.

Feb 27 12 1:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Boy, it sounds like we share a lot of experiences, guys. My first was a trip to the drive-in when I was about 3 years old. I'm pretty sure it was PINOCCHIO, though it might have been SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS. As toddlers are supposed to at drive-ins, I was in my jammies in the backseat and fell asleep early on. My family was definitely not a movie-going group. My next movie, and first indoor, was about 6 years later, when I was nine years old, and we saw --yes-- THE SHAGGY DOG. Later that same year I was finally allowed to go with friends to the local second-run house for the Saturday matinee. My first movie without parents, just before my 10th birthday, was the Steve Reeves HERCULES. That opened the floodgates, and I quickly saw CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE BLACK SCORPION, THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE, RETURN OF THE FLY and a zillion more. There was no stopping me then.

My Grandma took me to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the once glorious Parkside Theater on 19th and Taraval in San Francisco. Of course, like almost every other movie palace in San Francisco, The Parkside is gone. I was back there many, many times afterwards checking out sci-fi and horror marathons on Saturday afternoons. I wanna be a kid again!

Feb 28 12 5:54 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	as far as i recall, that darn cat, but the jungle book, a couple yrs. later on and in '66 was more memorable as a movie event for me. at TDC, i had to sit on a box on the seat to see the screen well enough, might have been 2(?) years old at that point, so my recollection is vague, although i thought i saw an animated coca-cola ad before the movie...those advertisers are pretty insidious! Feb 28 12 9:47 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	One of my earliest distinct memories is of Ed Wynns' face, in colour, on a movie screen. After doing a bit of research an math I figured out that this was the remake of Babes In Toyland and I would have been 2 years old when I saw this. A much clearer memory of having watched an entire movie in the show was Gullivers Travels and I think I was 5 at the time. When I was 6 my teen aged sister took me to see Help while she was baby sitting me. This was done without my mothers knowledge. It was at night and we stayed and watched it twice. My sister later told me that we watched it twice because she knew that it would be a long time before she was allowed out again. She indeed got grounded and this was the first awesomely cool thing that I remember doing.

Feb 28 12 11:18 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think -- I'm not sure -- but I think the first movie I ever saw in a theater was The Sound of Music, and it became a favorite of mine. I still like it today, although I can't sit through it without getting moist-eyed with nostalgia. I know I also saw Swiss Family Robinson, That Darn Cat and 101 Dalmations very young, but I think Sound of Music was first. Believe it or not, when I watched the original miniseries V back in 1983, one aspect of the story reminded me (and my Mom) of a similar character arc in The Sound of Music ...

I spent a lot of weekend afternoons at my local home town threatre, since the guy who owned it earned extra money by playing "Kid's double features" on Saturdays and Sundays, giving local parents a much appreciated break. "[The audiance] will populate the darkness with more horrors than all the horror writers in Hollywood could think of. If you make the screen dark enough, the mind's eye will read anything into it you want! We're great ones for the dark patches." -VAL LEWTON

But I don't see it as sad that your folks took you to THE NUTTY PROFESSOR. My dad took us to see that same film when it came out and my brother, my sister, and I all loved it. I still love it.

Mar 2 12 1:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks for the Wikipedia link, Craig. I've tried to figure it out on my own, using the standard Disney 7-year re-release schedule. But, of course, that schedule is not marked in stone, so it's still guesswork. According to Wikipedia, PINOCCHIO was re-released when I was 4 years old, which seems about right. SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS was re-released when I was 2 years old. That seems awfully young, but I do have at least two or three identifiable memories from that early age which are about as clear as my memory of the visit to the drive-in. So, I'll still say probably PINOCCHIO, but an outside chance of SNOW WHITE.

The theater wasn`t that big and by the time we got within a few kids of the boxoffice, it was sold out. There was only one showing and the next day the movie was gone. It was like another 25 years before I saw it.

I was probably five and I can't remember why it made such an impact. Maybe it frightened me. First in-door theatre was Tommy Kirk turing into the Shaggy Dog, my first manimal experience, probably 5 or 6. Definetely frightened me. What can I say? I was a a bit of a wus.

The first "adult" film I can name is Bonnie and Clyde. And as Ray Harryhausen says about King Kong, I've never been the same! In a good way, I mean.
