Sep 23 11 12:51 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Linda Davis' book Charles Addams, A Cartoonist's Life, says that Addams gave the family their individual names in 1963 when the set of dolls made by Aboriginals, Ltd. mentioned earlier in this thread, were being prepared as merchandising tie-ins with the upcoming TV show. "Addams came up with 'Moricia' while looking in the phone book under 'morticians'," so says the book. His inspiration for Morticia was "sort of an ideal for me" and that "there might be a little Gloria Swanson in her." Looking at the very first cartoon with Morticia I can definitely see the silent movie actress Swanson in the character. Wednesday was a name Aboriginals came up with. Pubert was Pugsley's first name but Aboriginals "thought that sounded dirty." Then Addams went with Irving. "What's so funny about Irving?" one of the salesmen asked. "That's my name." Gomez could have been named Repelli. Addams gave John Astin the choice of names and he chose the former. BTW, the book never mentions Vampira, Elvira, Carrol Borland, Maila Nurmi, or any law suits other than the one (or threatened lawsuit) brought against Addams by his former wife, to whom he had unknowingly signed over all rights in the Addams family.

Feb 23 12 11:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Folks-- Wow, it's been a long time since I posted here, and a long time since anyone else has either. Well, I still wanted to share this good news with all of you. With the encouragement of Maila Nurmi's wonderful niece Sandra Niemi and the participation of some of her dearest friends including Dana Gould and Jonny Coffin, I have been hard at work on a new, comprehensive and (dare I say it?) (I think) groundbreaking documentary film about Maila's life called VAMPIRA AND ME (PS-I am not the "me" in the title--Maila is). It's grounded in a lengthy and comprehensive on camera interview I did with Maila back in 1997 as well as about ten hours worth of audio only interviews I did with her during the height of our friendship, which was from 1994 to 2001. For the record, we didn't have the sort of falling out Maila sometimes had with folks--just lost track of each other when I went out of the country for a couple of projects at the same time when Maila was moving. The doc is full of stuff that's never been seen before, including an amazing kinescope of Maila as Vampira on the George Gobel show, which I bought at auction and struck a new and pristine HD master from. We expect to be done by June. We're crowdsourcing the finishing money (or at least trying to). As a result, a full project history and a trailer containing some of the Gobel clips can be found right here. Please have a look--it was very therapeutic for me to come and visit with you here from time to time during the long and lonely periods on this film, so I consider you all contributors in a meaningful sense. We have incurred substantial restoration and research expenses, so any contributions would be greatly appreciated--your name in the credits plus special rarities and premiums for just 50 bucks! Oh, and here's a lobby card--we're going to kick it old school and make a full set of eight, including several images of Maila that have not been circulated since the 50s. Enjoy! I appeal to all you "Monster Kids" to donate whatever you can to the cause, whether it be $5, $10, $20 or more. When it comes to my Aunt Maila, I'm not too proud to beg. This is too important. She also appeared in a couple of episodes of "The Rifleman", and had a couple of lines in the movie "The Apartment" as a switchboard operator. Zacherley accompanied Lynn Cartier on that publicity tour and he could no longer recall her name. The woman in the second link is definitely Maila Nurmi. She's wearing the Vampira get-up Liberace had made for their stage show in Vegas. She used the same costume during her second television incarnation on KHJ-TV. GARY L.
