NOTE---This post will include SPOILERS
Like many monster kids, I have a lot "mystery memories", those long-ago slivers of images that frightened me, but have managed to elude my adult self. However, last night I think I solved one! Here's the background:
I remember seeing a show as a kid that had some people slowly walking up stairs, heading to the second floor, then on to the attic. There was something in the attic, and although I was too young at the time to fully understand what it was, I knew it scared me. For some strange reason I thought a big spider was in the attic, and that's how my adult memory recalled it.
I'd tell this to friends over the years but no on could help me place it. Then last night, while watching an episode of NIGHT GALLERY, I began to feel this could be it! The episode, SOMETHING IN THE WOODWORK, featured Geraldine Paige as a bitter divorcee who finds something in the attic and plans to use it to help her kill her ex-husband (Leif Erickson). The actors and storyline didn't ring any bells, but when she started walking slowly up the stairs something stirred in my memory. Could this be it? When she got to the attic I felt a childhood chill wash over me. (But where was that big spider? There was one shot of two spiders in a web, but that's it.) Later in the episode her ex-husband took a slow walk up the stairs. At that point I was sure I'd solved it.
No, there was no spider, just the spirit of a man who had been killed in the attic. I love mysteries but always feel a little sad when they're solved. But no worry, I still have many more childhood mystery-memories waiting in the shadows....
