Since this is a Classic Film message board, let's consider a few things that are - or were - common knowledge in motion pictures. For instance: If you're watching a movie ( or even a television show ) and the action shifts from America to... say... Great Britain, how do we know? Well, usually there will be an establishing shot - probably of Big Ben or London Bridge - and the background music will begin playing RULE BRITANNIA - also known as HAIL BRITANNIA.

If the action switches to France, you actually have 2 options ( depending on the purpose ). If the intention is to depict France in a political or patriotic light, the background music will be THE MARSEILLAISE with the Arc de Triumph in an establishing shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MFAGYNIHpQ

But, if we are intended to see France in a general or romantic sense, the Eiffel Tower will probably be used in an establishing shot accompanied by LA VIEN ROSE as the background music. In fact... the music is so powerful that an establishing shot may not be needed at all! If the motion picture just shifted scenes and began playing the music in the background, the audience would immediately 'get' the cue and realize that we are now in Great Britain... or now we're in France... etc... Or, at least, that used to be the case... because it was "Common Knowledge". I'm not so sure it is anymore...????

I was watching THEY WERE EXPENDABLE last night, and there's a scene where the PT boat guys are thrilled when the VIP they're transporting turns out to be MacArthur. But nobody ever says his name--we're supposed to know it's him just by the actor's resemblance to the actual person. I wonder how many viewers today know who he's supposed to be?

Oh Snap! was used in the Biz Markie song "Just a Friend" which was a top 10 hit in 1989. So it goes back at least that far. I'm guessing it's just a Hip Hop phrase.

I knew a girl who using the term as in "Then I snapped to it" to indicate becoming aware, realizing what was going on, discovering the answer. Sometimes you'd explain something to her and she'd say, "Oh, snap," meaning that she understood. This was back in the early 1980s.

I've heard the Announcer's Test somewhere before once or twice, at least the first 8 or 9 steps. But it was certainly not common knowledge to me or amongst my friends. Glad to see it in print, though. I'm tempted to memorize it.

Well when I was in the army in the sixties and seventies, I was almost completely cut off from popular culture, except if I found time to catch a movie at the base theatre. I didn't have access to a TV. Didn't really know much about shows like All in the Family or Kojak. So when I left the army, when folks were gabbing at work, I would really raise eyebrows with questions like "who is Kojak?" It became a joke with them about how out of it I was.

Well, when Elvis died, a friend called one of the ladies at work with the news, and after taking the call she came rushing in to tell us that "Elvis died?"

One of the ladies I was working with looked at me for a reaction. I just deadpanned, "Elvis who?" which broke up everybody.
