Feb 9 12 5:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Any reviews I've read were pretty strong; it was apparently well-made. It seems that many of the late-'20s silents got lost in the shuffle when things went toward sound. Ironic, as many of the early sound features were pretty mediocre, but the "new technology" of sound was the thing, so many of the later silents received poor or truncated distribution and many prints were 'lost' or stored away and uncatalogued. As was often the case with popular films of that period, Ramper had theater dates for many months. These items represent about 10 months of showings, most in the state of NY. I don't know how its distribution was elsewhere in the US. All reviews certainly suggest that it was a sort of horror film, and people interested in the Sasquatch would likely embrace this as an early (or the earliest?) film variant on stories of that animal. In reading newspaper reviews of A Blind Bargain, that film definitely must have fit the horror mold, much more than London After Midnight, and I have newspaper materials on ABB as well.

The film was better appreciated in Germany perhaps because there was more familiarity there with the play the film was based (Wegener starred in that as well). The movie received wide distribution in the US, much more so than most German films, no doubt because of its conncection with First National (whose German subsidary made the film) and because of topical interest in the Byrd expeditions. Was the "abominable snowman" story being told as early as the twenties? I'm not sure.. "Ramper" can certainly be considered a horror film, especially the early sequences where the stranded ship's crew has to contend with the Beastman. Henry Nicolella

Feb 10 12 12:46 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There were Sasquatch news stories (using that name) in '34 or so, and I thought there was a reported incident in 1922. That name was used aboriginally in the NW by tribal groups much further into the past than that. I have copies of news stories, from scanned newspaper files, which include 1800s stories about gorilla-like animals seen in the US. The Byrd tie-in is certain--even some newspaper ads made that connection.

I have a book here that attempts to discredit the Patterson footage, but much of its claims are more vague and speculative than the claims behind the footage itself, and so far that bit of film looks much more effective than virtually any other claimed footage or still photos I've yet seen. I cannot yet believe the book's assertions, and so much of its "expose' " is based upon supposition and rumor.

Seriously, hasn't that footage been discredited? Didn't somone involved with the shooting of it admit that it was a hoax? I hope not.

Feb 17 12 12:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The book I read was written from a skeptical POV and at first seemed credible, but then I reviewed it again on its claims and found it as lacking in verifiable evidence as any spurious claim from the other side--that is, a good story can seem compelling, but if it's claimed to be true, then there's a lot that has to be proven, and in this opposite case those who tried to disprove the event and film didn't really do so to a level that can be verified. Some so-called "skeptics" don't actually use that word properly, as they seek to only disprove unusual claims by others, and often use methods which themselves require belief. Strong claims either way require a lot to back them up. Many myths have some basis in reality, and if that book truly made its case, it's less likely that the film would still be studied by legitimate researchers. I sure can't assert the film's authenticity, but nor can I discredit it based on someone else's claims, unless I feel I can verify those claims. There's a lot that I used to doubt that I've changed my mind about over the years.
