In some thread around here, I made mention that years ago in a "Castle of Frankenstein" mini-review by Joe Dante, he stated that Warren William was just about signed to play Holmes in 1939, but there was one more actor to be considered and that was Rathbone. I would have liked to have seen Warren play the role - not at the expense of Basil, but at least on some occasion. I'm not at all adverse to an American playing the part. After all, in 1939, the biggest film of the year had two non-Americans cast as Southerners.

Scott in The List of Adrian Messenger wasn't bad, Mitchum in the same movie, maybe one or two others --- and it just grates.

January 10, 1948, there's a page 5 headline "Predicts heavy Vote for Wallace in South." Sounds 20 years too early? No, this was Henry Wallace and his Progressive Party. But most interesting (for our purposes) is a column-filler that you can observe in the center of this clip . . .

Feb 9 12 4:00 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	They Might Be Giants is brilliant, though of course Scott portrays a nontraditional "Holmes". One of the many pleasures about it is the way viewers are left questioning preconceptions. It's a film of subtleties, just a gem. I'd rank it alongside Harold And Maude; the early 1970s had some remarkable films. I am surprised how many people have not seen the film, though I recall Castle Of Frankenstein (in its rave review) stating that it had little to no real theatrical release; I saw it first when NBC ran it shortly afterward. And I am irked that the music group using the same name has for some confused the nature of the title--I don't like that group's music. Scott (and this film) do NOT belong in any "worst" category at all.

Feb 9 12 4:12 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS is, indeed, a really wonderful film with a typically brilliant performance by Scott. Joanne Woodward is also wonderful and very endearing. Jack Gilford, Rue McLanahan, all of them are just great. The movie is touching, exciting, funny, and ultimately, both heartbreaking and uplifting.

I saw part of this about two weeks ago, I've seen some very bad movies, but this was really bad, bad, bad and I only saw the first and last ten minutes of it. But still!) Not too mention how many times Jane Seymour has played an American. (But I do have a soft spot for Lady Jane.) Maybe not the worst performance as Holmes, but I think one of the lesser Sherlockian efforts was 1972's HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES with Stewart Granger and William Shatner. (Not overly found of the Peter Cook/Dudley Moore HOUND spoof, either. The lads were capable of better.) And I think American television's two attempts at relocating Holmes into modern day, 1987's THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and 1993's SHERLOCK HOLMES RETURNS, both could have done so much more with the concept. (Witness what the BBC has done with SHERLOCK.) And since those two contemporary takes on the character came from CBS, it makes me less than hopeful for that same network's new modern day Sherlock outing currently in the works.

Mann (Sherlock Holmes and the Shadow Chasers -or Shadow Catchers (2011); plus an earlier version of Hound (2005). I think both were only sold on video on demand. then, Kevin Glazer in Sherlock Holmes (available in full on YouTube) and Ben Syder (Sherlock Holmes 2010, on Netflix and dvd) All three are attempts to cash in on the Downey version. Going back a little, Patrick Macnee (the Hound of London 1994), and James D'Arcy (Sherlock:Case of Evil, 2002)
