I saw the unrestored footage of the seance sequence at one of Darren Gross's presentations at a DS Festival several years ago, and it's well worth waiting for--my impression, rightly or wrongly, was that this was Dan Curtis's finest moment as a genre director. I really wish the footage of the surreal lovemaking sequence between Charles and Angelique in the ruined swimming-pool with all the debris, torches and candelabras, seen behind the title at the end of your second NoDS trailer, had survived. The stills from that sequence are incredible. H.

Jan 31 12 9:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The footage for the Night of DS "trailer" looks like the shot of Barnabas walking towards Collinwood from house of DS, with a radio promo for the 2nd film as soundtrack. I wonder whether this "trailer" was devised before the rushes had been edited into the trailers that we all know for the film. The spot for the Miss American Vampire contest is new to me, too. I had no idea that it was one of the promo campaigns for house of DS. The winner of the contest did indeed appear in an episode in the fall of 1970. She had no lines but was a spooky looking barmaid seen briefly in the local bar. H.

I checked a dvr recording of HOUSE... from last July against Tuesday night's broadcast after Tim Lucas posted that he heard the new one was supposed to be the new widescreen HD master. Turns out it wasn't widescreen, but... OLD: NEW: Do note, these aren't exactly the same frames, but pretty darn close. Appears to me that it WAS the new transfer, but then they chose the 4:3 version cropped from the widescreen one. Go figure... Kundun Rat Terrier: 8/16/02 - 3/26/11. RIP, Ku.

Feb 1 12 4:11 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I didn't catch this on TCM, and was not involved with the transfer of this title. While it does look very tight, almost all previous transfers of HODS and NODS were semi-open matte, not pan n'scan. It wasn't shot hard matte, and you wouldn't want to see it open matte all the way as they did not protect for open matte. If you see the full aperture, it's boom mics and floor mics galore. When they used to show 16mm prints on local stations they would show the entire frame, making it seem full of bloopers, mics and sloppy filming. While it was a rushed production, and a bit haphazard, the mics were never accidentally left in the shot... the reflection of the camera and crew, yes. Floor and boom mics, no. Trying to judge a 1.33 pan n scan section of a 1.85 master is a bit of impossible. The cropping on the top and bottom is most likely correct. It's the older transfer that is showing too much. Bgart- can you post frame grabs from one of the letterboxed shots of the title sequences vs the older vhs for comparison. That will help. There probably wouldn't really be this debate if TCM showed it letterboxed...TCM usually uses OAR if available, and this was remastered in the last few years. Cheers! It's not surprising they ran it , nor does it reflect on TCM in any way. What is mystifying is that in 2012 Warner's is still creating fullscreen syndication masters. With a long awaited DVD release coming soon I can understand why Warner's doesn't want to 'give away' the widescreen transfer on TCM.

Feb 2 12 2:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks for posting these Bgart. The widescreen framing looks completely correct. The older VHS & LD is almost completely open matte for much of it, and naturally shows more top and bottom than should be seen. It looks solid. Nice to see it's not looking washed out, blacks are black and reds are red, not the reddish orange of previous transfers. Comparatively, it looks a tad dark, but both the IB tech print I have and the print Turner made a decade or so ago, are dark. The day for night is much more convincing that way, as much as blue filtered day for night can be... Jameson is absolutely correct. I believe the first station that showed the new transfer was Chiller and they required 1.33FF.
