Jan 14 12 2:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Having watched my Mel Brooks blu ray box set (will have to wait to get a multi region player to see YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN), I am now working my way through his remaining films on SD DVD. DRACULA DEAD AND LOVING IT has a lot of negative critics. I love it. Leslie Nielsen is great (as usual), and the lovely Anne Bancroft as gypsy woman Madam Ouspenskaya is a scream. I think it is a great tribute to the Universal (and Hammer) Dracula's. Sadly Mel has made no films since.

Jan 14 12 7:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've said it on another thread, but Blazing Saddles is very hit and miss for me, but Harvey Korman's part in it is an exception, because just about ALL of it works. And that's how I feel about this one - even if I didn't like it in general (and I do), his part in it would stand out.

Maybe if you've never seen a Mel Brooks film before would this some how make you giggle, but once you've seen basically anything else he has made, you're set up for one of the biggest let downs. Watch YF, and leave the monster-spoofs at that.

Truly, if you've seen much Mel Brooks before seeing this one, well, you've already seen this. Brooks made some seriously hilarious movies, but he put so many jokes in each movie that it was perhaps inevitable that he'd run dry fairly quickly. Frankly, you could have gone to about any filmmaker and told him "make a Mel Brooks' DRACULA" and he would have come up with this. Predictable, old-hat, not very funny. I thought the one almost-saving grace was Peter MacNicol's Renfield, a great riff on --and homage to-- Dwight Frye.

Jan 20 12 7:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	While I wouldn't rank it as highly as YF or The Producers, I found Dracula, Dead and Loving It very entertaining. Veering into a slightly different direction, it seems to be chic in some circles to talk down the musical version of Young Frankenstein. Well, I was able to see the touring company and I, and everyone in the Majestic Theatre, roared with laughter! It was a great evening. It certainly didn't hurt that Roger Bart was starring as Frederick Frankenstein either. So, different strokes and all that.

Jan 31 12 10:21 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw SPACEBALLS and absolutely hated it. Then LIFE STINKS came out and got terrible reviews. Then came ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS and I decided to give it a chance. It is the inly movie I have walked out on. There was no way I was going to go see DRACULA: DEAD AND LOVING IT. Leslie Neilsen is brilliant in the NAKED GUN franchise, but all of the low budget spoof films he did were painful to watch, and this one was looking to be right alongside those. The few scenes I have seen have done nothing for me. So, I ask you, fans of the film, where do you place it against the others? Brooks, prior to SPACEBALLS, is wonderful and I love almost all of it. My only "non-love" is stong liking during that era. My problem is that he chose to start shooting for the AIRPLANE/NAKED GUN style of film, or the obvious joke type of spoof. His stuff became forced, whereas even his earlier flunks such as HIGH ANXIETY felt like their own movies, and not blatant copies of what they were spoofing. I will still take bad Brooks over any of the current crop of spoof films (NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE being the lone exception). My fanzine all about Rock N Roll: www.sonicruin.com
