I just watched an episode of the 70's cop show POLICE STORY, which had Jackie Cooper as one of the nastiest SOB's I've ever seen. He and his crew robbed liquor stores and restaurants, and then Cooper would rape some poor girl right there in front of all the horrified victims. He was actually a bit frightening, and very good in that role. What memorable psychos do you recall from some of your favorite tv shows/made-for-tv movies? Mickey Rooney as the Zaroff-like sheriff in the Suspense Theater Americanized version of The Most Dangerous Game . The title was The Hunt. Bruce Dern as a psycho hillbilly in so many episodes of 60s TV series that I can't remember them all. Lonely Place (Alfred Hitchcock Hour) stands out. John Dehner as the patriarch of a gang that holds the Barkleys, or most of them, captive, in a Big Valley episode. Fine performance, atypical of Dehner, who's not dapper at all in this one.

Jan 3 12 6:29 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Strother Martin was a most memorable psychotic criminal in an episode of BARETTA. I just about never watched that show, but seeing that he was the guest star that week, I just had to tune in. A young Gary Busey as his sidekick was an added bonus.

Jan 3 12 7:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks, Mike. There were so many memorable psychos on TV back in the day. Of the westerns, The Rifleman seemed to have one every week or so. Wagon Train and, especially Gunsmoke, each had their share. One psycho that lingers in my memory: Robert Ellenstein's tormented Mr. Tomachek in the One Step Beyond episode Message From Clara. He gave a literally haunting performance in this entry, which wouldn't have worked nearly so well with a lesser actor.

He may be most infamous as Falconetti in RICH MAN, POOR MAN. Jan 9 12 2:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	One who really creeped me out was Edward Herrmann in "The Mole" episode of the updated "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". The final scene in the tunnel between him and police detective Don Francks, when Herrmann reveals who he is, is IMO one of the most frightening climaxes in television. Speaking of the wonderful Mr. Herrmann, he obviously had a knack for portraying unbalanced-masquerading-as-sane characters, as was also evident in his performance as Capt. Steven J. Newsome, the surgeon who eventually "loses it" in the MASH episode "Heal Thyself". That was another chilling (and creepily convincing) portrayal of madness.

Fine performance, atypical of Dehner, who's not dapper at all in this one. Denver Pyle played a similar role in an episode of the B&W hours of GUNSMOKE called NO HANDS. Even though it's kind of thrown in toward the end, I always think of Richard Basehart in the Columbo episode "Daggers of the Mind" in this way. As he's being confronted about the murder a genuinely disturbing smile spreads across his face, and he gives a big laugh of the same kind.

Jan 17 12 2:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Ah, Denver Pyle! There was always a creepy-pathetic quality to him even when he was playing a sympathetic character. Maybe it was the overbite; whatever it was he tended to come off as out of his depth in nearly every situation he found himself in; over his head, never hip or streetwise, determined to see things through regardless. Such a unique quality. Things always seemed to get out of hand with him. It's like: there's reality, the way the world works, and then there's Denver's Pyle's take on it. I have an early childhood memory of him in an episode of Fury, the details of which I can't recall but the final scenes are memorable. Pyle's the bad guy, is in pursuit of Joey, there's a forest fire raging all around and Pyle is trapped under a fallen tree or something. Joey is either next to him or trapped with him; whatever it is he pries himself loose and tries to escape from the Pyle and engulfing inferno. Pyles gets and grip on Joey, holds him down. He wants the kid to burn alive with him!,--talk about sadistic --even James Anderson would probably say "run away kid, my number is up" or some such. But not Denver Pyle.

You can say the same for Timothy Carey. I just watched him play a gangster's goon in an early UNTOUCHABLES episode. He was a sick pyro who loved setting fire to people. Talk about a guy who MASTERED playing large, menacing and unsettling characters. Jan 19 12 5:21 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tim Carey was way over the top, Mike . Did he ever not play a psycho? He seemed always to be on the verge of either going berserk or a seizure. Denver Pyle was Mr. Peepers compared to him. Pyle could play normal when the opprtunity arose. I've never seen Carey do that. In terms of sensibility, Carey was like a psycho beatnick on steroids. That was more or less his schtick in whatever he was in. Pyle had the air of a Puritan, of a man born out of his time who never quite "got" what was going on around him. I'd be physically more afraid of being in Carey's company (so to speak ), more uncomfortable emotionally being with Pyle, who had a hellfire and brimstone way about him.
