Nov 10 11 12:00 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My first Great Detective and Good Doctor were Rathbone and Bruce. Loved them - until I met the originals in Doyle's stories, and saw what a diluted, skewered Watson that was. As an actor, I give anyone new a fair shot at a classic character (witness many posts in many threads around here.) But they have to make the grade. For me, Wontner, Rathbone, Cushing, and Brett (Justin, I still hope you grant the best of Brett a chance sometime...) have done this best on film, and Rathbone and Carlton Hobbs on the radio. There are several more down both lists who had lesser but worthy successes with the role. I'm a very big fan of Downey's in general. But for me, he's just the wrong man for the job here - ala Keaton's Batman/Bruce Wayne. And Ritchie's conception doesn't help; measured by the Doyle yardstick, it just falls notably short for me. -Craig

Nov 10 11 12:35 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My first exposure was also through Rathbone and Bruce. In a way Rathbone's mug is still the first image that comes to mind when I think about what Holmes looks like. That's imprinted from childhood. But once I started reading the stories themselves, I realized what a myth nearly all of Rathbone/Bruce movies were. Truly Brett nailed him like no one else ever has. Though I'll say that for a non-canon universe Cumberbatch is pretty much nailing it too. I think Brett himself was obsessed with getting Holmes right, and a driving force behind making the Granada Holmes work, and Cumberbatch is a really good actor following very smartly written scripts from writers who understand the ACD characters. I think Martin Freeman and Hardwicke are tied for Watson, they both bring very interesting portrayals to the table. -Shonokin The Pulp Reader

Dec 15 11 9:08 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Saw the new Downey film at a premiere last night. I think I liked it slightly better than the first one, which isn't saying a lot, mind you. It's a decent enough action film, but I'm in the "it's not MY Holmes" camp. The actor playing Moriarty was good. Stephen Fry is fabulous as always. Noomi Rapace is sort of wasted. Favourite moment... Watson's hangover. The two biggest deficits are the frequent use of Matrix-style slow-mo/fast-mo during fight scenes along with similar scenes trying to show Holmes thought processes... they take me right out of the moment. And I just can't get behind the martial arts stuff. Bottom line is if you liked the first one, you'll like this, if not... MacXoftheMounted.....................formerly known as Professor Von X

In a nutshell: Over the top steampunky Victorian-era Lethal Weapon 2 sort of buddy flick with a bonkers James Bond plot and villainy wrapped around an interpretation of Conan Doyle's The Final Problem. Silly, campy, action-packed, popcorn flick with bags of entertainment value that builds on and surpasses the first film. Jared Harris is a brilliant Moriarty, Jude Law is back as one of filmdom's top Watsons, and Robert Downey Jr. is...still...very much the same Robert Downey Jr. I liked it for what it is...fun, escapist, action, fantasy fare. As 'Sherlock-Holmes-for-the-masses-anno-2012' it's a great piece of entertainment and quite a bit better than the first film in my opinion. I found the finale to be very effective! Quite suspenseful and tastefully done considering how over the top the first half of the film was. Plus, it has Stephen Fry in it! The man is more awesome than awesome and a gift from the gods.

I just look at it as something similar to those novels that pit Holmes against Dracula, or the Martian invasion of 1891... escapist fare, using our favorite characters as a jumping off point. These films are so far afeild from Doyle that they almost have no impact on the original stories... except perhaps to get a younger generations to be curious enough to actually pick them up, now that they've graduated from Harry Potter... My only complaint about these films are the highly stylized "fight sequences" which just leave me befuddled. Silly me, I always thought that the point of film editing was to convey... with clarity... what was happening within the scene... Odd to me that they use such confusing, short cuts during a simple street fight, but when they get to the barrage later in the film (which is ridiculously lineiar) suddenly THEN they shift into 96 fps slow motion... Weird choices, to say the least. And Hawkeye, I have to agree with you. Fry as Mycroft was a brilliant bit of casting. "[The audiance] will populate the darkness with more horrors than all the horror writers in Hollywood could think of. If you make the screen dark enough, the mind's eye will read anything into it you want! We're great ones for the dark patches." -VAL LEWTON

'Quantum of Solace' is a great example, hadn't a clue what was going on half of the stunt fights... As for Fry - brilliant casting, but frankly I would have bought tickets to see him play a 12 frame bit part as a mute waiter in a Victorian brothel. That's how much I love the man.

I gave the first one a shot and it was actually OKAY. It was formula pap with a Victorian setting. It goes for all the usual buttons and will likely hit them squarely if one's brain is suitably disengaged. But I can't bothered with a second load of it. It's more of the same, I'm sure. And what particularly annoys me about this 'product' -- generally speaking -- aside from how it all increasingly looks like a ++%!+ video game -- is how this predictable array of mannerisms (or tics might even be a better word) so completely erases any real sense of identity, regardless of setting, genre, time-period, cast, etc. Directorial style -- remember that? Seems to have gone out of the window. Because the way in which these multimedia enterprises are executed has taken on such a profoundly exacting level of method that original thought won't really squeeze into the tiny cracks this breathless, homogeneous schtick leaves. It's getting REALLY dull. I don't want my buttons being pressed in this way. Leave them alone. I can feel brain cells dying painfully in every second of it.

Nope, not even Stephen Fry can make me interested and I do think he's fab. Also, the argument, 'this crap is better than most of the other crap' isn't terribly persuasive!!

And as a different interpretation of an oft told tale (with a good, witty cast that's obviously having fun) I personally rather liked it. I had a good time with this one and I wouldn't mind seeing the inevitable nr. III. BBC's 'Sherlock' also does The Final Problem tonight, now there's storytelling to sink your teeth into!
