The '70s were a time of experimentation in cinema. At the end of the 60's, movies became progressively more violent and controversial, starting with "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) and "The Wild Bunch" (1969). Censorship was becoming more lax, after decades of stringent rules in American cinema pertaining to violence and sexuality. The 70's then came along, and produced a large number of films that, to this day, are quite controversial, even disturbing. Many have become classics, and are very compelling-----if you have a strong stomach. In my opinion, the 1970s were quite possibly the greatest decade for cinema ever----mainly because of the freedom that filmmakers had at their disposal to realize their vision. The first half of that decade produced some of the bleakest films ever made.
Among the most controversial films of the 1970s:
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971)
DELIVERANCE (1972)
STRAW DOGS (1971)
DIRTY HARRY (1971)
SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE (1972)
THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974)
I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978)
LAST TANGO IN PARIS (1972)
THE EXORCIST (1973)
THE DEER HUNTER (1978)
THE WARRIORS (1979)
Any thoughts and/or opinions regarding these films (and others from the 1970s)?
