Aug 2 11 6:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Got the DC SHOWCASE: DOC SAVAGE phonebook today. First of all, I just gotta say it's REALLY FRICKIN' WEIRD to have such unmistakably "Marvel-ous" product published with the DC logo slapped on it. The "That's Just Wrong" Effect was even more pronounced on DC's previous Doc Savage tpb from last year, reprinting Marvel's color comics run from the early 70s -- seeing those distinctive 70s-era covers with the "Marvel Comics Group" banner empty was somehow subtly disturbing. Not saying it's a BAD thing, just kinda surreal -- kinda like Ford making Camaros or KFC selling Big Macs. Okay, now that I got that off my chest -- the reproduction quality is really good, and it's neat to have all those stories collected in one fat volume. Art is mostly excellent throughout: lotsa John Buscema and Tony DeZuniga, nifty pinups by people like Neal Adams, Tom Sutton, the mysterious Ed Davis and a very young Mike Zeck and Bob Layton. Looking forward to re-reading these. Also picked up volume one of the JACK KIRBY OMNIBUS. Besides Kirby's relatively short run on GREEN ARROW, it contains tons of mystery/sci-fi shorts and a few odds 'n' ends -- basically, Kirby's entire 1950s DC output, minus the CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN stuff (available seperately in both the Archives and Showcase formats). Not gonna be to everyone's taste, but I dig it.

I also recently picked up a book that might be of interest - the Modern Masters Volume 5: Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. It's definitely worth getting if you're a fan of Jose! Aug 30 11 9:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've been picking up the reprint volumes of Marvel's VAMPIRE TALES magazine from the '70's. These have been great with stories of Morbius the Living Vampire, Blade and Lilith, the daughter of Dracula himself. There are also individual tales of vampirism in the series as well. Certainly worth a look.

Sep 21 11 4:35 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Wow - thanks for that - what a blast from the past that 'Chiller' pocket book is, SoL! I used to read a few of those titles back in the day - 'Chiller' and 'Fantastic Four' being my particular favourites. Many a happy afternoon after school was whiled away with a pile of cheese sandwiches and a few of those little beauties. I also have fond memories of their forerunners, the weekly UK 'Planet of the Apes' and 'Dracula Lives!' b&w comics. Those Marvel US Dracula strips look weird to my eyes in their original colour format thanks to years of conditioning by cheapie Marvel UK reprints! Therefore, those Essentials volumes are superb value for a monochromatic throwback such as myself. I'd love to see an Apes volume but there are probably various barmy legal/rights issues involved in reprinting an obscure comic from forty years ago.

I even went so far as to buy the 'Young Romance' title, for the sake of completeness! ( I think I hid it under the Spider-Man pile ). My first exposure to Conan, the FF, the Micronauts, and Colan's Dracula. I know what you mean about colour. All those strips work in colour, but for me Colan's Dracula is and always should be b&w. It's just far, far more evocative, I think.

Sep 22 11 9:38 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Sol, since I looked at that FF Pocket Book cover I feel the compulsion to tuck into an enormous doorstep cheese sarny! The range was a really good way to get a look at a large sample of classic Marvel material in the days long before trade paperback collections were the norm. Like smaller, cheaper Essentials, if you like. I never had the 'Young Romance' title myself but that is only for the reason that I never saw it! They were read cover to cover many, many times but I ended up giving all my Pocket Books away some years later to some kids at a comic mart, the comics didn't have any re-sale value and I thought it would be good if someone else could keep on enjoying those great early Marvel strips the way that I had..

I'm familiar with the Wrightson run, so I pretty much knew what I was getting. The great surprise has been Nester Redondo's art - what a talent!

Mar 14 12 10:56 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I picked up the Showcase PHANTOM STRANGER Vol.2 in the used book section of Barnes & Noble recently for like 6 bucks -- it's a hoot. Some Wein/Aparo, then it switches to Arnold Drake/Gerry Talaoc (which I like better in black & white than I did in color). Also some oddball crossovers like the JLA story with the Rutland Vermont costume parade (Wein/Dillin/Giordano), and some Brave & the Bold stuff. The backup strips are fun; I'd forgotten about Spawn of Frankenstein, originally by Wolfman/Kaluta, then continued by Skeates & Bernard Bailey (!) -- the old Spectre/Starman Golden Age guy, he draws Frankenstein in the Dick Briefer mold (!). Weird. They skip the Rose & Thorn backups, but there's an interesting Dr. Thirteen story that DeZuniga apparently knocked out using the then current CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN photo mag for reference. One character consistently resembles Robert Urquhart/Paul Krempe, and another suddenly turns into Peter Cushing for one panel. They had a METAL MEN Showcase there too for cheap, but those benefit more from color, I think.
