I thought everybody had either seen the Charlton Heston movie, read the original short story in school, or heard it read aloud around a campfire at summer camp.

They had to fight them off, but weren't particularly in a hurry. "Here come the snails! We must contact the Minister of the Interior!" "I'll send off a telegram at once!" "No, no telegram. First class mail will do." That kind of thing.

I don't think any other movie, or news story, or tv show, or ANYthing grabbed our universal attention like that movie did. Saw it again about 10 years ago and, unfortunately, the luster was pretty much gone.
