May 12 11 2:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Probably anything he made at the time would pale to the two previous successes. My guess is it was just too unexpected a move for too many people. Plus, I think the humor is a little more old-fashioned than some of the other more cutting films at the time, personally. And my take was that most of that movie only existed to get to the plane chase through L.A. I don't think it's terrible, but it's a lesser film from him.

May 12 11 5:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yeah Rakshasa, Paul McPhee's Bruce head sculpture from a few years ago is the most accurate one that has been out there and still is. I asked where mine was, and he said it was on my pillow. Then I met Richard Dreyfuss and we discussed a lot of things. Sometimes he looked like Hooper, sometimes he looked like Dreyfuss from now. We talked about JAWS, and he confided that he was down on his luck these days and needed the cash, which was why he did a horror convention a couple of years back. He was so broke he asked if he could stay at my house because he had nowhere else to live at the moment. For whatever reasons, in my dreams it's often my grandparents' home where I grew up as a kid... I had to tell him I was sorry, but my grandmother wouldn't approve. "Guy named Squeamy got thrown from the fifth floor. He's deader'n a mackerel."

Long overdo after all that hologram nonsense and man,does it look great. can't wait to see that sitting on the shelves to finally enjoy in its ultimate state. The SHARK IS STILL WORKING is icing on the cake.

Jul 10 12 9:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Watched JAWS again today and came up with some interesting thoughts about Quint and his personality. Two lines in particular: The shark has taken the barrels down again and Hooper asks a shocked looking Quint if he's ever had one do this before. Quint replies, "Don't know". (While I think Quint is basically a decent guy, he is a bit of a megalomaniac when it comes to his boat and his fishing skills. There may be more than a touch of insecurity mixed in, too.) I found it interesting that Quint can't open up and admit he's never seen a Great White act this way. It's almost as if doing so would show a sign of weakness... ...however, a later scene and line demonstrates Quint knows when he's between a rock and a hard place. A quick shot shows the Orca, dead in the water, and listing heavily in the stern. The three men are standing in silence when Quint finally says, "Hooper, what exactly can you do with these things of yours?" I believe for Quint to even ask that question shows a major arc in his character. This is GREAT writing and Robert Shaw pulls it off beautifully. One more thought regarding JAWS: I may be the only person on this planet who feels this way, but I prefer the death of the shark in the book to the ending of the movie. In all other ways the movie is superior, but the book does a magnificent job of setting up Brody's fear of the water and that plays out in spades during the final pages. I'm glad Hooper lived and I'm glad Quint had to go one-on-one with the shark to meet his demise (both different from the book), but seeing that shark gliding toward Brody, turning sideways to bite, then slowly begin to sink (per the book's ending) could've been great, too. I can imagine a shot, from Hooper's viewpoint on the bottom, as the shark closes in on Brody. Strangenstein

Jul 11 12 7:15 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just watched this again myself on July 3rd. I agree with those two scenes you mention, Strange. Also, when he throws Hooper and Brody life preservers (and fails to take one himself) I feel is another "I'm not so sure" moment for Quint. The movie still gives me chills. My heart still pumps harder when it's supposed to during certain scenes in the film. There's still two abrupt edits I'm not sure we covered or not around here that still bother me. One, when Hooper is examining Chrissy's severed arm. He picks it up and says, "This is what happens..." and then it's cut off. The other is when the shark is devouring Quint and he's flailing and screaming up towards the middle of the boat and suddenly he's silent (dead) and the shark is pulling him in the water. One more thing. When I saw it in the theater, I don't remember hearing Brody saying "blow up" and "show me the tank" in the finale. I think the music may have drowned it out or something. I think it plays better in my mind when I don't here him say it. It's like he's telegraphing the ending.

Jul 11 12 12:47 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Watched it on the 4th myself and it really gets better with each viewing and ESPECIALLY in light of the genre turning itself into a rapid fire,quick cut editing sort of entity. I love JAWS pacing and don't find anything in it that lags. When we aren't in the water,i like seeing Brody go about his daily business and the local color is great. I got to see it in a theater last year and it worked over its audience like a maestro. Everything fires on all cylinders and that damn Bluray can't come fast enough.-
