I think the film plays brilliantly even in its old age, although after viewing it perhaps more than 50 times, certain shock scenes will lose their impact. But when the film first opened it was totally frightening and overwhelming to audiences. I remember one screening where several audience members left their seats immediately following the shower murder (I could hear a soda can dropping to the floor), presumably going to the upstairs lounge to "relax." Recently my buddy and I watched parts of PSYCHO. We concentrated on the sequence between Arbogast and Norman Bates at the motel. It was -- again, brilliant. Acting, cutting, camera angles -- just wonderful. And the trucking shots of Vera Miles as she approaches The Psycho House really convey the sense of dread. Years ago I was attacked while seated in my car by tire iron-wielding thugs who smashed out my windshield. To demonstrate how Hitchcock is really tapped into people's subconscious and perceptions, I had three "dreams" that night that conveyed the horror and helplessness of what happened to me: all were scenes from Hitchcock movies. It only appears to be weakened when we watch it so many times, and we watch it so many times because it is so great.
