Dec 2 06 7:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	For all it's faults and what could have been (Rod Serling had some grand ideas for it!), I find this show adorable. Alan and Pete are cheesy, but not really anymore so than many other 70's TV action heros, and the are very likable. Especially when teamed with the great Roddy McDowell. And there is just something charming about seeing men in ape makeup in anything remotely resembling semi-(an) intelligent drama. I wish the show had lasted longer. Anyone else want to come out of the closet and confess to not hating this show? www.itcamefromplanetx.com

Dec 3 06 8:32 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I love all the Apes stuff (68-75). I was seven years old in 1974, and I can still remember how excited I was the first night the TV series aired. That shot of the ape holding his gun in the air gave me chills. It still does! I had all of the Mego action figures (Virden, Burke, Galen, Zaius, the gorilla. I even had the battery-operated horse AND the holy grail: The Planet Of The Apes Tree House Play Set! I also wore a Ben Cooper "Warrior Ape" costume for Halloween that year. I'm proud to say I'm now 39 years-old and have my Planet Of The Apes DVD Ape Head Set sitting atop my DVD shelf (some things never change).

Dec 3 06 12:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've come to really like the TV series, but when it premiered (when I was 12) I was really disappointed because it didn't follow the same pattern as the first two films. All that's changed now. The show really had the idea right about where more movies in a film franchise could have gone - from village to village with different types of characters, civilizations, and situations. We had all sorts of new issues tapped upon - a blind ape, a community infested with disease, other cities and governments, etc. ---------------------- "It's MORE ... than a hobby!"

Dec 3 06 5:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I can recall, as a kid, being a little disappointed with the series, as well. I think it was because it seemed smaller in scale, if that makes any sense. (And Dr. Zaius wasn't Maurice Evans.) I do like it better these days, but it seemed to follow the trend of borrowing from THE FUGITIVE to use the "man on the run" formula. (THE INVADERS was, maybe, the first sci-fi series to use that, which is natural since both THE FUGITIVE and THE INVADERS came from Quinn Martin.) There were a handful of other sci-fi shows that would do the same. (THE INCREDIBLE HULK probably being the most high-profile.) I remember hoping we'd see more underground Forbidden Zone stuff, more mutants, etc. Today, it's easier to appreciate it on its own terms, rather than back then when I wanted it to be more like the feature films.

Dec 4 06 8:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	THE FUGITIVE format seems such a natural fit for ongoing adventures on the Monkey Planet, my only complaint is that the show didn't take full advantage of the isolated, different communities. I think Rod Serling's original proposals suggested the fugitives might encounter various mutants, enclaves of highly advanced apes and humans, areas where the humans dominate the apes, and so on and so on giving the show a lot more potential serious social commentary or at least the exploration of more fantastic ideas. In fact his proposal reads something like Gene Rodenberry's lofty (nad somewhat pretentious) goals for his unsold GENESIS 2/PLANET EARTH projects. Still I'm pretty happy with what we got. At worst they seem like so-so GUNSMOKE or BONANZA episodes: with men in ape make up. Heck I quite like GUNSMOKE and BONANZA and I just love men and women dressed up as apes! One complaint I've heard is that the show wound up being squarely aimed at kids. The main characters and their relationships certainly didn't seem to suffer for it though. Burke (the supposed cynical one!) and Virdon are a bit bland and clean cut, but in a very admirable sort of way. Galen is probrably my favorite of Roddy McDowell's chimps. The three together had as much potential as Kirk, Spock and McCoy, if only wriiten with a bit more maturity. But I still enjoy what we have. One thing I diffenately have liked different about the show is how 99% of the time the good apes are invariably chimpanzees. There was the occasional honorable gorilla, and Zaius is sometimes quite reasonable, and I think there was one totally psychopathic, evil female chimp out to brainwash people and blow up Ape City, but that whole orang, chimp, gorilla caste system was just begging to be explored. Some of Serling's ideas may not have been used because of budgetary constraints, but what ended up on the screen was still plenty thrilling. I love THE FUGITIVE concept anyway (it worked great for THE INCREDIBLE HULK a few years later), so it doesn't bother me to have it fused onto the Apes. The only downside is that because the show was cancelled so soon, we never had a resolution to Burke and Virdon's situation. I would have liked to see them get home.

I seem to recall reading that the actor also liked the role, as he had more time to explore the character. (It seems like he may have even stated he preferred playing Caeser over Cornelius, as well.)

Ceaser has his amazing ark from chimp to champ and finally a shakespearan sort of put upon leader. Galen is like a mixture of Corniliuas and the early Ceaser. He cares more about the truth even when it flies in the face of what he was brought up to believe. He's willing to put his life down for his human friends. And he still finds time to pretend to be several other apes! It must have been a great role to make him endure that makeup on a regular basis~! www.itcamefromplanetx.com

I don't believe he's ever referred to as "Doctor" Zaius, and the name "Zaius" could just be a common name like Bob, Joe, Smith or Jones. He may even be able to be taken as an ancestor of the Dr. Zaius from the original film, since the year of the series is 3085 and the movies are 900 years later. Maybe as obsessed apes fans we can assume that this Zaius was the one who passed down the threat of man which the movie Dr. Zaius later tried to hide from the masses. I think the producers of the show probably wanted to make references to the first film and perhaps even intended this. There are early scripts where the Urko character was called "Ursus" (as in BENEATH). The first episode has Zaius saying that another ship landed there 10 years earlier (Taylor's??) but later on he says the astronaut didn't live long enough to tell Zaius his name before he was killed by the apes, so this I take to be some other astronaut we'd never heard about. Thankfully, with the change to "Zaius" and "Urko" and the 900 years difference in chronology, the TV show works better as occuring BEFORE the first two films. In the first episode there's a book with a photo of NYC looking all industrial and prosperous in the year "2503." This could NOT have happened after CONQUEST and BATTLE, but it could have happened in the timeline of events that Cornelius and Zira explain in ESCAPE... and right prior to the time man's civilization fell. Which is why I still view the series of events as: 2006 (today at the CHFB) 3085 - TV Series 3955 - PLANET and BENEATH (end of everything and return back to:) 1973 (alternate version; not ours) - ESCAPE 1991 (alternate version; not ours) - CONQUEST 200-- (alternate version; not ours, Obviously!) - BATTLE ...the future...? ---------------------- "It's MORE ... than a hobby!"

The TV show did drop references in that seemed to be about events from the feature films...until you start thinking about the years that each is supposedly set in. *Quote:* the name "Zaius" could just be a common name like Bob, Joe, Smith or Jones. Appearing this week only at The Sands, Bobby Zaius and the Banana Boys.

Some of it is silly and inconsistent (for example, apes wear glasses, but they're all astonished by the magnifying glass that Burke makes in a later episode), but the better episodes give a pretty good hint of what the show could have become if it had been supported by the network and had better writers. It's when the two of them find out where they are and what happened, and it's so understated. So at the one extreme you have Charlton Heston's "Damn you all to hell!!" and at the other you have James Naughton's very quiet "Oh, no." Of course, both extremes work, so you don't really have to choose between them.

May 25 11 2:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I love the whole Apes saga!! I had to fight with my brother to watch the TV series I remember. The TV series was originally released separately, and I can swear when it came out with the movie DVD's some of the scenes in the TV episodes were missing. Has anyone else noticed? In the hang glider episode, Burke makes a magnifying glass for Galen, and you see him fascinated by it. In the Complete DVD episode, you don't see that scene, just Burke using it to burn the glider.

Jul 31 11 7:23 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just finished the POTA tv series and I gotta say.. I really enjoyed it! I can't figure out why "other than ratings" this got cancelled so soon. So now I just watched the first four episodes of the animated series. And so far it's pretty enjoyabe as well. I'm guessing this was a repeat, as it was on at like 6AM. I really should check it out on DVD. In between a dinner break they were showing a 16mm cartoon episode, and I caught some of it ... it was the one where Cornelius and the astronaut were riding around in a hot air balloon while a prehistoric bird flew all around them and endangered them, squawking like mad. It was absolutely excruciating... very, very bad... the audience was in hysterics. "Guy named Squeamy got thrown from the fifth floor. He's deader'n a mackerel."
