I also liked Mountain Dew, but it was somehow hard to find in Oklahoma when I was a kid. The color grossed me out when I first saw it in a cup, but I liked the taste once I tried it. Fresca was actually the only diet soda I liked back in the saccharine era. At least it was SUPPOSED to taste like grapefruit, which was what all the diet Shasta sodas (esp. the strawberry) tasted like to me. Anyone remember cyclamate, the artificial sweetener used before saccharine? I still have in my possession an unopened box of Mr. Wiggle, "the candy-flavored gelatin dessert from Jell-O" sweetened with it. I wonder if it's still edible after all these years. Sometimes I think about making it, but I'm afraid that (A). I might enjoy it but never be able to eat it again because it's the last package or (B) There's a strong possibility that it could have gone bad some time since 1969 and it could kill me. Probably wouldn't even gel up, come to think of it.

Jan 3 11 6:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Speaking of Mountain Dew I remember back in the 60's some kid told me that it was made from Radiator fluid!! And I fell for it and never drank it!! Kind of like the urban legend about some kid drinking 7-up and eating pop rocks and his stomach exploding. I have tried Mountain Dew and don't care for it. I have not tried drinking 7-up and eating pop rocks though.

Mar 13 11 10:09 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've already chimed-in on my perfect monster kid days but least we get too down at what has passed get some perspective. Let's go back to October of 2010 for a moment. I'm in the Philadelphia area where churchyards look haunted and the bare branches of the trees move eerily in the wind. There are entire stores set-up to to sell Halloween props, costumes, and whatnot. I walk through these and it makes me very happy. The neighbors in our solidly working-class neighborhood have tons of Halloween decorations on the lawns and houses. I hate slasher movies but can get many good classic horror films from the library on DVD and the stuff on the kid's channels (I have a soft spot in my heart for the HALLOWEEN TOWN series of TV movies) and … oddly enough … women's channels are actually more to my squeamish tastes. Not bad if you think about it. I may have to ask if it's possible to contribute some Hammer films to the library … they're very weak in those and Corman Poe movies. Still we are living in a "monster kid" time. I have to remind myself of this whenever getting old or the craziness in the world gets me down. Still I wouldn't have missed the silly, but deeply loved, stuff from my childhood … except possibly being born 4 or 5 years earlier so I would've been the right age for the summer of love in San Francisco. Now that would've been cool. Also to have been old enough to have made some movies back when "el cheapo" flicks actually played in theaters! But all of that would be "monster adult" memories, now wouldn't it? opticalguy1954@yahoo.com (Spencer Gill)

I've enjoyed the discussion of favorite snacks and the like,though a bit off topic.Anyone remember Pommac? It was sort of an apple flavored soda imported from Scandinavia.I remember Mountain Dew in those big glass bottles "packed by Cousin Jake"etc.They seemed like they had much more syrup back then, or maybe my taste buds are just getting old. I recall having a cousin come for a rare sleepover. We went down town to the "Dime Store" as the Ben Franklin's was nicknamed.They had these cool monster tattoos with bubblegum for a penny apiece,so we loaded up.Years later I paid $15 for one of those wrappers at an antique show.We bought a bunch of penny candy(for a penny!) to carry us through "Terror in the Night" later that evening. As I recall "Bride of the Gorilla" was on tap. Sometmes I almost feel guilty for having" good old days" this good. I could go on and on.....

My childhood was so much fun I almost feel guilty as well. When I see the NFL Network run service announcements to encourage kids to get outside to play I have to say "WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH THAT! We were outside all day and just came in to eat. Everybody knew everybody, and the weekends and summers were a continuous adventure. I am still in contact with a lot of these people and feel very lucky to have been born during this era.

It was really bad if one of my friends knocked at the door while we were eating. I was suddenly "full" and wanted to go outside.

Just do your business quick as you can. (2) Your mom insisted. In my case, that meant I could ignore when she called "Rickie...Rick...Richard Pruitt..." but when she yelled "Richard Oscar Pruitt Jr. get in here now!" it was time to go. (3) Abbott and Costello were on the 4 o'clock movie. What would usually happen would be somebody would run in for a quick bathroom stop, catch a look at the TV, and yell out their backdoor, "Abbott and Costello!" And everybody would split like a stink bomb had just gone off. Can't tell you how many A&C movies I caught in the middle.

During the summer you always heard someone's mom yelling across the yards or down the street. If that failed, they sent the fathers to go walking up and down the block looking for you. Each mom had their own call. My mom's was the prolonged, "Rahhhhhhh-berrrrrrrt!" with her right hand cupped by her mouth. I miss those days and I miss her.

Apr 23 11 5:30 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I don't really remember my Mom calling us in for dinner or lunch much at all (probably because after I reached 10, there was no way you could keep me away from home when food was being served). "Going out to play" was THE thing in my childhood, and the only thing that could deter me in that regard was something really good on TV. It could get really hot outside in the summer, and without air conditioning, being inside wasn't much better. However, my friend Jimmy who lived just down the street, was a doctor's son, and they could afford air conditioning (yeah, window units were all you could get back then), and I was always ready for some indoor play over at Jimmy's. Nevertheless, not much else that could be found indoors could trump being outdoors, biking, chasing after horny toads, digging trenches in the undeveloped areas in the back of the subdivision, playing baseball, and having dirt clod fights with other kids. Apr 23 11 5:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Dirt clods, yeah, we called them Dirt Bombs. Many a fine hour was spent throwing and dodging them. We would dig roads and tunnels for our Matchbox cars or other cars and trucks. Indoors was Motorifics, HO trains, and racing cars.

Horribleherman, I don't remember Pommac, but I do remember Aspen soda from the late 70's. I think it came in green bottles and cans. God, I loved that stuff when I was a kid, but I don't think it was around very long--it was sort of like a sparkling non-alcoholic cider, but slightly sweeter and I just remember it being light, crisp and refreshing. I wonder why no major soda company still makes an apple soda? Afraid of being accused of getting the yout' of today hooked on hard cider? What Would Sasquatch Do?

May 16 11 8:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	One stumper I always pull out when doing the "good ol' days" thing is Seven Up candy bars.They were sort of like a fused Whitman sampler, in that they had different types of candy,like coconut, butterscotch,etc. with a Brazil nut in the middle covered in either milk or dark chocolate. It also cost TWICE as much as a regular candybar....a whopping ten cents.I actually have an empty box I found at an antique show, concrete evidence that I'm not crazy. In regard to Seven Up candy bars any way.
