Just watched this again and I have to wonder exactly what happens in this film. I have three main ideas:

- Mary's dead from the first accident, and that is why the dead are trying to capture her - she's just a ghost who needs to be restored to death, but who doesn't realize is actually already dead. I believe this is the ending that most folks get from the film, and certainly what I thought the first time I saw it.

- Perhaps this film can be seen as the first "Final Destination" type film where she DID survive the initial crash, but the ghosts were sent to put her back in the car due to fact that she escaped her intended death. With this interpretation, the story of Mary's adventures in the town did happen, and when the ghosts collected her at the end they put her back to where she was supposed to have died. If Mary is alive but just "fated to die", then it's possible she could have escaped had she gotten far enough away from the ghosts.

- A third possibility: Mary talks a number of time about not being herself after the accident. When we see the ghosts dancing in the pavilion at the end, the main ghost is dancing with the ghost of Mary even while she is alive - perhaps this shows that the accident split Mary in half, where her spirit exited the body but the body lived (for a time) and that the ghosts are merely trying to reunite the two. This would explain the strange hollowness that Mary feels, and why she seemed to drift farther and farther into her own world as she continued to be split from her soul.
