Feb 7 11 5:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think that this Cameron/Ellison thing is really complex, but I will say that there are a hundred lesser-talented directors that would have shot the same script, but with much less dynamicism and ferocity than Cmaeraon injected into this thing. I'm not saying that the suit did or didn't have its merits, but I think in this case the battle between these two titans of sci fi was not won by either of them, but by the viewing public.

Seeing as I dislike most of his movies, I like to go on record praising him for this one! :P I, too, found the 'flashforwards' in T1 amazing, and Brad Fidel's mournful score really helped give a sense of hopelessness. I watch the fourth one the other night and enjoyed it again. It's not nearly as bad as some would have you think. But as a TERMINATOR film it's just not necessary. If they'd reworked it as a futuristic adventure flick, they might have had more flexibility to use the good actors involved. And that Moon Bloodgood or Good Bloodmoon or whatever her name is is hottie.

George Lucas monitored the making of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and lawsuits flew over it in terms of copying from STAR WARS. I don't want to talk about that, but I mention it because just as the makers of STAR WARS were touchy about being ripped off (never mind all the elements Lucas borrowed from multiple sources), it seems that in the years between SW and this lawsuit with TERMINATOR, people were very, very unsure about what they could use from SF history. It's interesting to see that Cameron felt no hesitation saying "Yeah, I stole this from a couple of old OUTER LIMITS episodes" when he did that interview--he and others seemed relaxed saying "Yeah, I got this from that." Around the same ten-year or so span there were also issues with the creators of SUPERMAN, and we know about the ALIEN/Van Vogt situation. Ellison also once told about a producer who pitched Ellison on writing a script about giant bugs, which Harlan rejected, and the producer told him to dig through some old SF mags and just take some ideas from there. If one does a search on Cameron's AVATAR and "Poul Anderson" one will find that Cameron has learned to keep his mouth shut about his influences, but his originality of screen stories is never going to be his strong suit.

Feb 24 11 8:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Re: the clip. The idea is that Jesus is trying to follow the prophecies, and the terminator doesn't get it, it wants to rescue him no matter what. Not particularily funny, but I did like a line: "Pontius Pilate is at the window!" to distract Jesus and shoot Judas a third time. It includes that chestnut, "What are you some kind of wise guy?" directed at the wise men. The clip might be taken down if there is a complaint. "There is a lot of money tied up in this film and people expect to hear a boom when something blows up, so I'll give them a boom." They refuse to believe that he did so even though Cameron admitted it on tape, just because the movie isn't 100% exactly like Soldier and "you can't copyright time travel."

After the convention, as my wife and I were walking through the parking lot, lo and behold, there was James Cameron! I asked if I could take a picture with him and I'll never forget his response: "Yeah, but hurry up". Not sure why he was grumpy, he'd just left a convention hall with hundreds of people who thought he walked on water. He's probably a nice guy but I'll never forget his being a little "short" with me. Anyway, I did get the picture with him. Then he got into his Corvette and drove off. My wife and I got into our Geo Metro and drove home.

That's pretty sad, especially since there are people in the business who are able to be both extremely talented and extremely nice, wonderful human beings (Cameron's frequent actor Lance Henriksen, for one). I wouldn't call The Terminator one of the best science fiction films ever but it is one of the best action films I've ever seen. The Abyss may be Cameron's least successful film overall, but his best film to work as science fiction. Think about it...

May 3 12 1:48 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	i think the terminator is the best film in the series and the one that is a classic. i prefer the practical effects in it to the best CGI thats out there.pratical effects always have more heart in my opinion. as far as cameron as a person ,i still remember hearing about a reviewer of the titanic.the reviewer said titanic was an awful movie and cameron should be banned from the wordprocesser.cameron actually wanted the newspaper that printed the review to fire the reviewer because of the review. one bad review out of all the titanic reviews and his ego is so hurt he makes such a demand.
