Or maybe, better yet, in a "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte" way. I think my all-time favorite scary song is at least a borderline country one, and that's Swamp Witch by Jim Stafford.

Black Water Hattie lived back in the swamp where the strange green reptiles crawl. Snakes hang think in the cyprus trees like sausage from a smokehouse wall. Well the swamp is alive with a thousand eyes, an all of them watchin' you, so stay off the track to Hattie's shack in the back of the Black Bayou.

There are lots of "horror" songs if you go back to the roots of today's country music to include bluegrass and its ancestor, "old timey" music. As noted above, there are a lot of old "murder ballads" about guys inexplicably killing their girl friends (folklorists claim the unmentionable motive was terminating a pregnancy). In some versions of the most popular of these songs, "Pretty Polly," the victim returns as a ghost. Another spectral beauty shows up in "Polly Vaughn," to inform a jury that her apparent murder was really an accident (this song was recorded by The Dillards, the bluegrass group that kept showing up on the old Andy Griffith TV show). There are ghosts in many of the old ballads which were brought to the Appalachians from the British Isles and survived there for centuries: "Lady Gay," "Rain and Snow," and "Lady Margaret." At the other end of the spectrum is the comedy song "Keep Them Cold Icy Fingers Off of Me," recorded by the classic bluegrass band The Stanley Brothers. Okay, I'm a banjo player--so sue me!

I love this song. Have it on an Elvira compilation of Halloween songs. Not strict country music, but Dave Edmunds "Creature From the Black Lagoon" might fit the horror country song category. Like a lot of Edmunds' stuff, it has a country-rock feel (with a touch of rockabilly thrown in).

Some of these quasi horrors�are about ghostly legends or first person murders that end up stretched out on the gallows�(Sam Hall - Tex Ritter). The floodgates for full-blooded monster novelties don't burst open until you make the transition into rockabilly and RnR.�But here are a few more country-flavored fright songs. Keep Them Cold, Icy Fingers Off of Me - Pee Wee King (nice western swing) Undertakin' Daddy - Wayne Rainey (cool country blues) Chicken in Black - Johnny Cash (brain of a dead bankrobber is transplanted into Johnny's head. When Cash goes back to the doctor he learns his original brain has been transplanted into a chicken�that�is now�a country singer) �� Old King Kong - George Jones (even mentions KK meeting Godzilla) Bigfoot - Don Jones (don't mess with Bigfoot) Ghost Memories - Gene McKown (ghost metaphor for a lost love) Mary of the Wild Moor - Louvin Brothers (haunting tragedy) Long Black Veil - Johnny Williams and the Jokers (woeful tale of murder) Satan's Child - Anita Carter (homewreckin', black-hearted devil girl will lead you to murder and death row) The Rubber Room - Porter Wagoner ('bout goin' crazy) One Dead Man Ago - Jimmie Skinner (ditto) Tennessee Hillbilly Ghost - Red Fooley � A Booger Gonna Getcha - Onie Wheeler (jaunty country/rockabilly) Tying Knots in the Devil's Tail - Rex Allen (cowboy) Taking Mary Home - Mac Wiseman (classic story about the ghostly hitchhiker. Nice song.) Wolf Girl of Devil's River - Jimmy Kish (song about�the legend of a�feral child. The "lobo wolf girl of Devil's River" legend goes back to the 1840s.)
