Apr 22 10 12:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just caught up with SW and I must say, to me it's a nearly forgotten gem of 70s horror that I'd recommend to nearly anyone. Some of those shots of the zombies would probably be considered iconic horror images if this film were better known. And I loved that music. 70s synthesizers could be eerie and melancholy in a way that no other instrument at any other time could be. Jul 6 10 6:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just saw DEAD SNOW over the weekend and I think if you could merge the atmosphere, superior character incidentals, and Horror star legends aspects of SHOCK WAVES with the Ramiesque free for all zombie fight fest of DEAD SNOW you'd have just about the perfect zombie nazi movie. Despite its bloodlessness and glacial pace I have to give SHOCK WAVES the edge over DEAD SNOW due to it feeling so much more original. One of the international movie posters glimpsed in the extras of the Blue Underground DVD seems to link the film to the popular myth about the Bermuda Triangle, and I wonder if that is what is being conveyed to the viewer when the boat passes through that weird yellow light and is subsequently almost rammed by a 'ghost ship' that in the light of day turns out to be a reef wreck. Is the island located in some alternate dimension inside the zone? DEAD SNOW is basically director Tommy Wirkola's version of Sam Rami's EVIL DEAD movies, substituting gold greedy Nazi zombies for demonic supernatural forces. The characters, a small party of Norwegian medical students, are pretty void of personality. One seems a bit more heroic than the others mainly by virtue of good looks and ownership of a snowmobile, another is sickened by the sight of blood, but is cured enough by the end of the movie to perform a self amputation (another echo of EVIL DEAD). Still another character is meant to be a sort of Monster kid (well splatter kid might be more accurate) but the only (possible) knowledge he brings to the table is a warning everyone to avoid being bitten. Despite its shortcomings DEAD SNOW has quite a few nice gory moments, and I have to say that stylistically the Nazis in this films look a lot more gruesome than the ones in SHOCK WAVES. I'd say these tow films would make a great double feature as long as you start with SHOCK WAVES.

The zombies are treated straightforwardly in terms of photography--they aren't hidden in shadows all the time, or shot with weird angles, and I love these kinds of 'daylight horror' scenes. The extended climax really worked for me. Good to see the mention of THE BUNKER, which I found very eerie. I'm much more into atmosphere than gore. P.S. THE BUNKER is a small classic of mood, since very little is ultimately revealed. It has what the very best horror movies have, a great setting that is well-filmed so the viewer feels like he's right there and involved. The opening credits are a tribute to those in SECONDS, and it's nice to be in the hands of moviemakers who aren't just into the popular recent trends but know their genre history. Oct 31 10 4:06 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	SHOCKWAVES is my favorite of the "nazi zombie" films out there, it treats its subject matter pretty seriously something DEAD SNOW does not. As mentioned before the location shoot added a lot to the whole atmosphere of the production. I really like the image of the rusted out half submerged wreck, and the zombies themselves are very eerie. The fish tank scene stuck with me as a kid after seeing it on tv for the first time. DEAD SNOW had its moments, it certainly tried to carry on that EVIL DEAD spirit so in that aspect I think it succeeded, and the makeup was generally well done. I agree with Jonatwork, THE BUNKER was a decent film as well. There is also THE OUTPOST (2008) which deals with an old German bunker being explored by soldiers of fortune, and they encounter some nasty things. This one too had a good bit of atmosphere to it, and excellent makeup.
