Just curious about this, and I figured this was a better forum to ask this rather than the comics folder...
Marvel had a Godzila comic in the 70's. I can't remember if it was any good, though I think I read an issue (something to do with Gozilla attacking Las Vegas). However, you'd think that Marvel would try to reprint it if they had the rights, so I'm guessing they don't... but who does?
I know with some material that Marvel did as a licensee, there were various deals in place:
STAR WARS - the Marvel is completely owned by Lucasfilm, which is why they could be reprinted
MICRONAUTS - Marvel owns some of the characters (the Princess and Bug, and I think the creatures who made the Acroyers), but not the suited Acroyers, or the other licenced Micronaut characters. The Microverse actually predated the comic, so the world still exists in Marvel continuity.
ROM THE SPACE KNIGHT - Only the Space Knight armor of Rom is lost to Marvel as I understand it; both the guy in the Rom suit and the Dire Wraith villains are owned by Marvel and still exist there.
Aside from Jimmy Woo and the other Howling Commandos who were in the Godzilla book, does anything else from the Godzilla run still exist at Marvel?
Another question: Since American comics aren't too popular in Japan, and since I'm assuming that it's Toho who has the rights to the Marvel Godzilla comic, is it unlikely that the Marvel Godzilla would be reprinted by them since they couldn't sell them to the Japanese comic fans? And would a Japanese company need to licence the Marvel characters to reprint the American comic, making the price prohibitive if they did want to do something with it? (And I'm guessing that the vise versa of the rights would make it a money-losing proposition for Marvel to reprint them as well).
Final question: is this comic much beloved or much hated by Godzilla movie fans?
