Looking at that friendly photo makes me think of the not-so-flattering things Chaney later said about how the A&C merging of comedy into horror started the ruination of the scare genre. Obviously it was not meant as a personal attack on Bud and Lou --- I don't think.

I've been collecting for 40 odd years, and computer collecting for 12. 90% are portrait headshots. Very, VERY rarely do you catch the actual person. That picture did..and it's haunting. Thank you Elisabeth Ron Chaney has had some photos taken in the same style that if it is not the same cap it is identical and it is frightening how much they look alike. Aug 19 10 12:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks for the pictures, Rak. In one of them, without makeup, hatless, Senior somewhat resembles veteran TV actor Harry Townes. Something around the eyes, his facial expression; not so benign, though. Chaney was a scary looking guy. Even if one didn't know who he was, he looked like a man who had gone through a great deal of personal suffering. There was tragedy in his face, a haunted quality. This was no ordinary man.

Aug 19 10 2:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Interesting thing about the Chaneys - Senior and Junior - both looked so much older than their years. In that shot with Costello, Lon Jr. was only 42. And Senior was just 48 when he died, but he easily could have passed for mid-to-late 50s even before he became ill. Know that Junior undoubtedly advanced the aging process through his lifestyle - and Senior possibly through the physical torture he put himself through in many of his film performances -- or did it also have something to do with heredity? After all, Bela was 48 when he appeared in "Dracula" and looked a lot more youthful than either Chaney. In fact, Bela probably looked his best (on film, at least) at age 52 in "The Black Cat". At 52 (in 1958) Lon Jr. was in terrible shape --- and, of course, Bela drank, too.

Sep 1 10 12:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	1.) The color photo of Chaney in MGM pictures. That was a poster the company put out to place in the Loew's theatres (parent company of MGM). I only know of four in existance, one of 'em I am looking at as I type this. They did these types of posters for all their MGM stars. As far as I can date it, it is circa 1926-27. 2.) The guy in the hat behind Chaney with Garbo is M. K. Wilson. At this point he was an assistant director at MGM. he and Chaney were pals since thier acting days at Universal in the teens. Wilson served as A.D. on Chaney's TELL IT TO THE MARINES and WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS. He can be glimpsed quickly in the latter film as a person on the street when Lon discovers a very dead Mae Busch.
