That's actually a pretty cool concept. Was there a reason why the idea was dropped? (Did it just not come off well on the maquette?)

I recently picked up Ivan Vartanian's new book Killer Kaiju Monsters: Strange Beasts of Japanese Film and he actually addresses this very issue. He says that Anguirus' splitting shell was dropped because it made it difficult for the actor to move around in the suit. Having the shell be one piece made for better mobility. Other interesting facts include that Anguirus' spikes were made of metal and covered in washi Japanese paper and colored bright emerald green. Also according to a press releases that accompanied the movie Anguirus hails from Siberia.

Angilas being able to raise his shell halves up to intimidate enemies never occurred to me. I would have thought it was just an error in the pic, except that I have seen (as I'm sure others have also) several different stills from the movie that showed this ability of Angilas' shell flying apart. I guess they really were heavily considering the idea when they were taking production photos!

Jun 18 10 12:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Next to Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster, this was the hardest for me to find as a kid, and when I finally saw it (the Gigantis version), I didn't like it. Even after seeing the Japanese version, I still didn't think much of it. Last summer, however, I went back and watched all the Godzilla films in Japanese in order and I really liked this one. Actually, I like Gigantis too. I think of it more as an American b-movie rather than an Americanized Godzilla flick. I find that helps a little bit.

I've probably seen this movie (mostly in Gigantis flavor) dozens of times but I didn't appreciate it until the most recent viewing. There's some actual Kurosawa actors in it. It's rare to see a monster movie that is not about soldiers or scientists but plain working folk. Like the original, a personal face is given to the destruction. Also, the monster fights are pretty bada$$. The Japanese version is of course better but I do miss the crappy dinosaur footage and the banana oil.

Jun 22 10 1:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	To tell you the truth, as a kid, I hated most of the non-monster plot lines in Toho's monster bashes and thought they were pretty useless. I just wanted to see some monster action. As I got older, I started to appreciate them alot more. Well, most of them. I still think the characters and plot in this movie are really boring, and the monster scenes are just so-so in comparison to other Showa monster bashes.

Apparently, at one time an American releasing company was going to distribute Godzilla Raids Again, stateside. Part of the deal was that Toho would be re-doing some of the monster footage and adding additional footage as well. Apparently Toho made a new Godzilla and Angillas costume for the project. I assume the project fell through, and the film was released in its present U.S. form as Gigantis. This is the story from the site where these photos were found. The first Photo shows the actual suits that were constructed, and the second is a model of the godzilla suit. Any more info ( or info correction) would be appreciated. Jun 27 10 7:18 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, the existing footage was to be incorporated into a new production called The Volcano Monsters, which would have had conventional dinosaurs being discovred and brought to San Francisco, where they would do battle - the footage of Osaka would have been used as Frisco's Chinatown. Ib Melchior was to write the screenplay, and Fx and gorilla veteran Bob Burns did see the costumes in storage over here in the states. So, like Gigantis, it wouldn't have been released as a sequel to Godzlla. The project fell through when the US company (I think it was called AC-TV, they released The Unearthly and Beginning Of The End) went under.
